Sorbus vilmorinii – Planting & Care Guide

About Sorbus vilmorinii

Sorbus vilmorinii, commonly known as Vilmorin's Rowan, is a graceful, small deciduous ornamental tree admired for its elegant, fern-like foliage, attractive white spring flowers and unusual berries that change colour as they mature. The berries begin white with a pink blush before gradually turning soft pink and eventually white again, creating a unique display rarely seen on other rowans.

In autumn, the delicate green foliage transforms into beautiful shades of red, orange and bronze, making this one of the finest small trees for seasonal interest. Growing to approximately 4–6 metres tall with a spread of 3–5 metres, it is perfectly suited to smaller gardens, courtyards and specimen planting.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
  • Suitable for loam, clay and sandy soils.
  • Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral soils.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Position the tree so the top of the root ball sits level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter.
  • Firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a generous mulch around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk.
  • Stake young trees in exposed locations until established.
  • Allow 3–5 metres of space for the mature canopy.

Care & Maintenance

Sorbus vilmorinii is a hardy, easy-care tree once established.

  • Water regularly during the first two growing seasons.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry spells.
  • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser if required.
  • Apply fresh mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility.
  • Keep the base free from weeds and grass while establishing.
  • Avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

  • Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches during late autumn or winter.
  • Lightly shape young trees if necessary.
  • Remove any suckers from the base as they appear.
  • Avoid heavy pruning, as the tree naturally develops an attractive rounded habit.
  • Always use clean, sharp pruning tools.
