Planting and Positioning

Trachelospermum jasminoides is a beautifully scented, evergreen climber with glossy foliage and star-shaped white flowers that bloom through summer. It's perfect for walls, fences, pergolas, or containers. Getting the planting right sets the foundation for a healthy and vigorous plant.

• Preferred Location: Plant in a sunny or partially shaded position. Full sun encourages the best flowering, though it will tolerate some shade.

• Sheltered Spot: Choose a sheltered position, ideally protected from cold, drying winds. A south- or west-facing wall is ideal, especially in cooler climates.

• Soil Type: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It will tolerate a range of soils, including clay or sandy types, if well improved.

• Soil Preparation: Before planting, mix in organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil.

• Planting Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Loosen the soil at the base and sides to encourage root spread.

• Planting Depth: Set the plant at the same depth it was in the container. Firm in the soil gently and water thoroughly after planting.

• Support Structure: Provide a trellis, wires, or frame for support, as this is a twining climber that needs guidance to grow vertically.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

Once established, Trachelospermum jasminoides is low maintenance but benefits from regular care, especially during its early years. It rewards attention with lush growth and abundant, fragrant blooms.

• Watering: Water well during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but prefers regular watering during dry spells.

• Feeding: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support healthy foliage and abundant flowering. A second feed in midsummer can extend the flowering period.

• Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base in spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil quality. Keep mulch clear of the main stem.

• Container Growth: Can be grown successfully in large containers. Use a loam-based compost (e.g., John Innes No. 3) with added drainage material. Feed and water more frequently in pots.

• Training and Tying: Tie in new shoots to supports using soft garden ties. Guide the plant’s growth to fill in the desired area or structure.

• Cleaning Up: Remove dead or damaged stems to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage new growth.

• Scent: The richly scented flowers are most fragrant in the evening, making it ideal near seating areas or walkways.

Pruning and Seasonal Care

Trachelospermum jasminoides is a slow to moderate grower but benefits from annual pruning to maintain its shape, encourage branching, and improve flowering.

• When to Prune: Prune in late spring or early summer after the main flowering flush has finished.

• How to Prune: Lightly trim back overgrown or straggly stems to maintain shape. Cut just above a leaf node to promote bushier growth.

• Hard Pruning: If the plant becomes too large or woody, it can be pruned more severely in spring. Allow time for recovery and new growth.

• Removing Suckers: Occasionally, basal shoots or unwanted stems may appear—remove these to keep the plant focused on its main structure.

• Winter Hardiness: While hardy in much of the UK and temperate zones, in colder areas, protect young plants with fleece during harsh frosts. Mulching at the base also helps protect roots from freezing.

• Evergreen Appeal: The glossy dark green leaves provide winter interest. In colder weather, foliage may take on bronze or red tints, adding seasonal colour.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
