About Viola cornuta Mix

Viola cornuta Mix, commonly known as Horned Violet, is a colourful and reliable bedding plant producing masses of cheerful flowers over a long season. The mix typically contains a varied selection of colours, which may include purple, violet, blue, yellow, white and bi-coloured flowers, depending on the mix.

More compact and delicate in appearance than traditional Pansies, Viola cornuta is particularly valued for its excellent flowering performance during cooler weather. Plants form neat, low-growing mounds and can continue producing flowers through autumn, mild spells in winter and well into spring.

Ideal for containers, window boxes, hanging baskets and the front of borders, mixed Violas are an easy way to add dependable colour to Irish gardens.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun or partial shade.
• Choose fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
• Water plants before removing them from their pots or trays.
• Plant at approximately the same depth as they were previously growing.
• Space approximately 15–20cm apart for a full display.
• Firm gently around the roots and water thoroughly.
• Avoid positions that remain permanently waterlogged during winter.

For the strongest visual impact, plant several Violas together in informal groups or repeat them throughout a mixed seasonal display.

Planting in Containers

Viola cornuta is an excellent choice for pots and other containers.

• Use good-quality multipurpose compost.
• Ensure containers have adequate drainage holes.
• Space plants closely enough to create a full display without overcrowding.
• Water thoroughly after planting.
• Keep compost evenly moist but not saturated.
• Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage continued flowering.

Violas combine beautifully with Cyclamen, Heathers, ornamental Brassicas, Ivy, Carex and spring-flowering bulbs.

They can also be planted above Tulip, Narcissus, Crocus or Hyacinth bulbs to provide immediate colour while waiting for the bulbs to emerge in spring.

Violas are easy to maintain and can flower for months with basic care.

• Water regularly during dry periods.
• Check containers frequently, as they can dry out even during cool weather.
• Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
• Deadhead faded flowers regularly to encourage further blooms.
• Remove yellow or damaged foliage when required.
• Apply a liquid feed occasionally to container-grown plants during periods of active growth.
• Plants that become slightly untidy can be lightly trimmed to encourage fresh growth.

Seasonal Interest

Autumn: Newly planted Violas quickly establish and provide valuable colour as summer bedding begins to finish.

Winter: Plants tolerate cool conditions well and can continue flowering during milder periods, although flowering may slow during severe weather.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
