Wisteria floribunda ‘Lavender Lace’ – Cascading Beauty with Scented Blooms
The Wisteria floribunda ‘Lavender Lace’ is a breathtaking Japanese wisteria variety, renowned for its dramatic hanging clusters of lilac-purple flowers. In late spring and early summer, this vigorous climber produces racemes up to 50cm long, each packed with pea-like blossoms that drape elegantly, filling the air with their sweet fragrance. Its romantic appearance makes it a stunning choice for pergolas, arches, or walls, where its trailing racemes can be admired up close.
As the seasons progress, its pinnate foliage provides lush greenery through summer, before turning warm golden-yellow in autumn for an additional burst of seasonal colour. With its strong growth, fragrance, and show-stopping floral displays, ‘Lavender Lace’ is a perfect feature plant for gardens of any size.

Care Guide
Wisteria floribunda ‘Lavender Lace’ is a long-lived climber that rewards proper care with spectacular floral displays.
Planting
-
When to plant: Best in spring or autumn when soil is moist and workable.
-
Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 3–4m apart if planting multiple wisterias.
-
Support: Provide strong supports such as a pergola, arch, or trellis; tie in stems as they grow.
-
Preparation: Enrich soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water regularly during the first two years to establish strong roots.
-
Once established, wisteria is drought-tolerant but will flower more heavily with consistent watering in dry spells.
-
Feed in spring with a high-potash fertiliser to encourage flowering; avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which promote leafy growth at the expense of blooms.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Summer pruning: In July or August, cut back new shoots to 5–6 leaves to encourage flower bud formation.
-
Winter pruning: In January or February, shorten summer growth further to 2–3 buds.
-
Train shoots carefully along supports to form a strong framework.
-
Remove suckers or basal growth to keep energy focused on the main plant.
Protection
-
Fully hardy but young plants benefit from shelter from cold, drying winds.
-
Rarely troubled by pests or diseases, though aphids may occasionally affect new shoots.
