About Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard'

Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard', commonly known as Adam's Needle 'Color Guard', is a striking evergreen architectural perennial grown for its bold, sword-shaped leaves featuring a bright golden-yellow centre with contrasting blue-green margins. During cooler weather, the foliage often develops attractive pink or rose-coloured tones, adding extra seasonal interest.

In summer, mature plants produce tall flower spikes reaching up to 1.5–2 metres, carrying large, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. The foliage itself forms a compact clump approximately 60–90cm tall with a spread of 60–90cm.

Planting Guide

• Plant in full sun for the brightest foliage colour.
• Will tolerate light partial shade.
• Prefers well-drained soil.
• Suitable for sandy, loam or free-draining clay soils.
• Improve heavy soils with horticultural grit before planting.
• Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
• Position the crown level with the surrounding soil.
• Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
• Apply a light mulch, keeping it away from the crown.
• Space plants approximately 60–90cm apart.

Care & Maintenance

Yucca 'Color Guard' is extremely drought tolerant once established.

• Water regularly during the first growing season.
• Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.
• Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
• Avoid overwatering, particularly during winter.
• Container-grown plants require occasional watering during dry weather.
• Keep the crown free from fallen leaves and debris.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

• Remove damaged or dead leaves by cutting them close to the base.
• Cut flower stems back to the base after flowering has finished.
• Wear gloves when pruning, as the leaf tips can be sharp.
• Remove any old or untidy foliage as required.
• Divide mature clumps in spring if propagation is desired.

Common Problems

Yucca 'Color Guard' is generally healthy and very easy to grow.

• Root rot may occur in poorly drained or waterlogged soils.
• Older lower leaves naturally brown and can be removed.
• Leaf spots may occasionally develop in prolonged damp conditions.
• Slugs and snails may damage young shoots, although mature plants are rarely affected.
• Planting in full sun with excellent drainage will keep the plant healthy and ensure the brightest foliage colour.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
