Planting Aconitum ‘Bressingham Spire’
Aconitum ‘Bressingham Spire’, commonly known as Monkshood, is a tall, elegant perennial producing striking spikes of deep violet-blue hooded flowers in late summer to autumn. It is perfect for adding height and drama to shaded borders and woodland-style planting.
Choosing the right position
- Prefers partial shade to full shade
- Tolerates some sun if soil remains consistently moist
- Ideal for borders, woodland gardens, and damp areas
- Works well towards the back of borders due to its height
- Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds
Soil requirements
- Thrives in moist, well-drained soil
- Prefers fertile, humus-rich conditions
- Suitable for loamy or clay soils if improved
- Does not tolerate dry or waterlogged extremes
- Improve soil with compost or organic matter before planting
How to plant
- Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and similar depth
- Position the plant so the root ball is level with the soil surface
- Backfill with enriched soil and firm gently
- Water thoroughly after planting
- Space plants around 50–70cm apart
- Apply a mulch to retain moisture
Planting in containers
- Best suited to the ground due to its size, but can be grown in large pots
- Use a deep container with good drainage
- Fill with fertile, moisture-retentive compost
- Water well after planting
- Place in a partially shaded, sheltered position

- Container plants may benefit from occasional liquid feeding
Pruning and support

- Tall stems may require staking in exposed areas
- Remove any damaged or weak growth
- Leave some structure for winter interest if desired
Mulching
