Overview and Features

Agapanthus ‘Winter Storm’ is a hardy deciduous variety of African lily that delivers striking bicolour flower heads on tall, elegant stems. It is part of the ‘Storm’ series, known for resilience, strong stems, and repeat blooming. ‘Winter Storm’ stands out for its large, white flowers edged in rich violet-blue, which appear in rounded umbels atop sturdy, upright stems.

This variety is excellent for adding vertical interest, colour, and long-lasting structure to summer borders. Its strong garden performance and compact foliage also make it well-suited to containers, especially in small gardens or patios. As a deciduous cultivar, it dies back in winter but re-emerges vigorously in spring.

• Produces white blooms with deep violet-blue margins

• Forms clumps of strappy, mid-green leaves

• Hardy down to approx. -10°C, with winter mulch recommended

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Agapanthus ‘Winter Storm’ is low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, and performs best in sunny, free-draining conditions.

• Light Requirements:

  • Thrives in full sun (6+ hours daily)

  • Fewer blooms in part shade

• Soil Preferences:

  • Requires well-drained soil—sandy or loamy is ideal

  • Avoid wet or heavy soils, especially in winter

  • Benefits from slightly alkaline to neutral pH

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during establishment and active growth

  • Once mature, drought-tolerant

  • Water container plants more frequently in hot spells

• Feeding:

  • Apply a high-potassium feed (like tomato fertiliser) every 2–3 weeks in summer

  • Avoid high nitrogen feeds, which promote foliage over flowers

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Remove spent flower heads to encourage reblooming

  • Cut back foliage in late autumn as it dies down

  • Apply a dry mulch in colder areas for root protection

• Container Growing Tips:

  • Use a clay or heavy container with drainage holes

  • Allow roots to become slightly congested to encourage blooming

  • Overwinter pots in a sheltered position or unheated greenhouse

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
