    Description

    Description and Characteristics

Alstroemeria 'Summer Breeze' is a striking and robust variety from the Summer Paradise® Series, specially bred for long flowering, garden resilience, and high ornamental value. This cultivar features warm peach-apricot petals with golden-yellow centres and subtle burgundy markings, creating a cheerful, tropical-inspired display ideal for sunny borders, raised beds, and large containers.

Reaching 60–80 cm in height and 45–60 cm in spread, 'Summer Breeze' is a medium-sized Peruvian lily with a bushy, upright growth habit. Its tuberous root system provides excellent drought tolerance once established, while the strong, leafy stems support the plant’s continuous blooming from late spring into autumn, often right up until the first frost. In addition to being a top-tier garden performer, it is also prized by florists for its excellent vase life and bold colour.

    • Sunset-toned flowers with yellow throats and fine dark streaking

    • Upright and bushy perennial habit

    • Blooms from May to October

    • Ideal for mid-border planting, mixed beds, large patio containers, and cut flower use

    • Hardy to approximately -10°C (USDA Zones 7–10); may need winter protection in colder zones

    Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Alstroemeria 'Summer Breeze' is easy to grow and thrives with regular watering, good light, and occasional feeding. It performs well in both garden beds and large planters, adapting easily to most well-prepared soils.

    • Sunlight Requirements:

      • Prefers full sun, though it will tolerate light afternoon shade

      • Sun exposure enhances flower colour and encourages compact growth

    • Soil Requirements:

      • Performs best in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure

      • Avoid waterlogged soils and heavy clay; improve drainage if necessary

      • Neutral to slightly acidic pH is ideal

    • Watering Needs:

      • Water regularly during dry spells—especially important for container-grown plants

      • Keep soil evenly moist during active growth and flowering

      • Reduce watering slightly in autumn as the plant enters dormancy

    • Feeding:

      • Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring

      • Boost with a liquid bloom fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during summer for continuous flowering

    • Deadheading and Pruning:

      • Pull spent flower stems from the base (rather than cutting) to encourage reblooming

      • Remove faded or yellow leaves to keep the plant tidy

      • In autumn, allow foliage to die back naturally or trim back lightly

    • Winter Protection:

      • In colder climates, apply a thick mulch layer over the root zone in late autumn

      • Alternatively, lift and store tubers in dry compost in a frost-free location

      • Container-grown plants can be overwintered in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse

Garden Design, Companions, and Floral Value

‘Summer Breeze’ is perfect for adding warm tones and upright structure to sunny garden beds and planters. Its long-lasting flowers and manageable height make it a versatile design choice and an excellent cut flower.

    • Garden Design Uses:

      • Excellent for mixed perennial borders, urban gardens, raised beds, and summer containers

      • Works well in cut flower beds, pollinator-friendly plantings, and seasonal displays

      • Strong vertical stems add rhythm and colour to formal or informal planting schemes

    • Companion Plants:

      • Pair with salvia, rudbeckia, echinacea, coreopsis, and ornamental grasses

      • Complements silver-leaved plants like artemisia or dusty miller

      • Works well in colour-themed plantings with soft pinks, oranges, and yellows

    • Cut Flower Attributes:

      • Vase life of 10–14 days

      • Pull stems gently from the base for better regeneration

      • Remove lower leaves and use clean water to extend freshness

    • Pest and Disease Notes:

      • Generally resistant to deer and rabbits

      • Slugs or aphids may target new growth—monitor and treat early

      • Ensure proper spacing and airflow to prevent botrytis and fungal leaf spot
