Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages the best flower display, autumn colour, and fruiting.

• Soil Preferences: Grows well in moist, fertile, well-drained soil—adapts to clay, loam, or sandy soils.

• pH Range: Tolerates a range from slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.5).

• Moisture Needs: Likes consistently moist conditions but not waterlogged soil. Mulching helps retain moisture in summer.

• Planting Time: Best planted in autumn or early spring while the soil is workable and temperatures are mild.

• Spacing: Allow 4–6 metres for mature spread when planting as a specimen or in a mixed border.

• Positioning Tips: Works beautifully as a specimen tree, in wildlife gardens, or in mixed shrub borders. Excellent near patios where flowers, berries, and autumn colour can be appreciated.

• Wind Tolerance: Hardy and tolerant of exposed conditions once established.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to establish roots.

  • Mature plants cope with short dry spells but benefit from watering during prolonged drought, especially in summer fruiting season.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer or mulch with well-rotted compost in early spring to promote healthy growth and flowering.

• Pruning:

  • Minimal pruning is required—remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring.

  • If shaping is needed, prune immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year’s buds.

• Mulching: Spread a 5–8 cm layer of organic mulch in spring to improve soil health, conserve moisture, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the trunk.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally trouble-free. Occasionally may experience leaf spot, mildew, or aphids—improve airflow and treat promptly if needed.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland. No special winter protection is needed for established plants.

• Propagation: Can be grown from seed (needs stratification) or propagated by softwood cuttings in early summer.

Seasonal Interest, Fruit, and Garden Value

• Flowering Season: Produces clouds of star-shaped white flowers in April, often before the leaves fully emerge, creating a striking early-spring display.

• Foliage: Young leaves are bronze in spring, turning green in summer, and then brilliant shades of orange, red, and gold in autumn.

• Fruit: Bears small, sweet, dark purple berries in early summer—delicious fresh, in pies, jams, or for freezing.

• Wildlife Benefits: Highly valued by birds, bees, and pollinators. Flowers provide nectar in spring, and berries feed wildlife in summer.

• Ornamental Value: Offers three seasons of interest—spring blossom, summer fruit, and vibrant autumn foliage.

• Garden Design Uses:

  • Perfect as a specimen tree for small to medium gardens.

  • Works well in wildlife-friendly plantings and mixed borders.

  • Can be trained as a multi-stemmed ornamental feature.

• Growth and Size: Moderate growth rate, typically reaching 4–6 metres tall with a similar spread, though can be pruned to suit smaller spaces.

• Longevity: Long-lived and low-maintenance once established, providing decades of beauty and seasonal harvests.

• Companion Planting: Pairs beautifully with underplanting of bulbs (daffodils, bluebells) for a layered spring display, or with shrubs like viburnum and hydrangea for extended seasonal interest.

All standard deliveries will be completed within 5-7 working days via Fastway Couriers, any delay to this delivery time, the customer will be notified by One of our staff.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
