Anemones are a diverse group of herbaceous perennials and tuberous plants known for their bold blooms, long flowering seasons, and wide range of growth habits. They bring early spring or late summer-to-autumn colour depending on the species and are a popular choice for both borders and containers.

Common Types in Gardens:

• Anemone coronaria (Poppy Anemone):

  • Low-growing, spring-flowering from corms

  • Large, poppy-like blooms in red, white, blue, and pink

  • Often used as cut flowers

• Anemone hupehensis / A. x hybrida (Japanese Anemone):

  • Tall, graceful perennials blooming from late summer into autumn

  • Elegant, cup-shaped blooms in pinks and whites

  • Excellent for shade and woodland borders

• Anemone blanda (Grecian Windflower):

  • Low-growing, daisy-like blooms in early spring

Light Requirements

• Anemone coronaria: Full sun to partial shade

• Japanese Anemones (hupehensis): Partial shade to full sun (prefer some shade in hot areas)

• Anemone blanda: Dappled sun or partial shade

Soil Conditions

• Well-drained soil is essential across all types

• Coronaria prefers sandy or loamy soils; Japanese Anemones enjoy moist, humus-rich soil

• Blanda is tolerant of light clay if drainage is good

Planting Tips

• Corms (coronaria & blanda): Soak for a few hours before planting in autumn or early spring

  • Plant 5–8 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart

• Perennials (hupehensis hybrids): Plant in spring or autumn

  • Space at least 40–60 cm apart due to their spreading habit

Watering, Feeding, and Maintenance

Watering

• Keep newly planted anemones evenly moist during establishment

• Japanese types benefit from consistent moisture, especially in dry periods

• Once established, most are moderately drought-tolerant

Feeding

• Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring

• Container-grown varieties may benefit from additional liquid feeding during flowering

Pruning and Tidying

• Deadhead faded blooms to encourage more flowers (coronaria)

• Cut back Japanese Anemone stems in late autumn after flowering finishes

• Remove old foliage from blanda once it dies back naturally

Seasonal Care and Longevity

• Japanese Anemones are long-lived perennials and may spread by rhizomes—divide every 3–4 years

• Coronaria and blanda are often grown as annual or biennial-style plants, though corms can be lifted and stored or left to naturalise in milder climates

• Mulch with compost in spring for moisture retention and root health

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
