Astilbe 'Hennie Graafland' – Planting & Care Guide

About Astilbe 'Hennie Graafland'

Astilbe 'Hennie Graafland' is a beautiful clump-forming perennial, valued for its elegant, feathery flower plumes and attractive fern-like foliage. Throughout summer, it produces airy plumes of soft pale pink flowers that rise above rich green leaves, creating a graceful display in shaded borders and woodland gardens.

Growing to approximately 50–70cm tall with a spread of 40–50cm, this hardy perennial is perfect for adding colour and texture to damp, partially shaded areas where many other flowering plants struggle. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, while the seed heads can provide attractive winter interest if left standing.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in partial shade or full shade.
  • Will tolerate full sun if the soil remains consistently moist.
  • Prefers fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil.
  • Improve the soil with plenty of compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Avoid dry, sandy soils that dry out quickly.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  • Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen the roots.
  • Position the crown level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants approximately 40–50cm apart for a full, natural display.

Care & Maintenance

Astilbe 'Hennie Graafland' performs best when the soil remains consistently moist.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Continue watering during dry weather, especially in summer.
  • Never allow the soil to dry out completely.
  • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Apply fresh mulch annually to improve soil quality and conserve moisture.
  • Remove weeds regularly from around the plant.
  • Deadhead spent flowers if preferred, or leave seed heads for winter interest.
  • Divide mature clumps every 3–5 years to maintain vigour and flowering.
  • Protect young shoots from slugs and snails during spring.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

  • Remove faded flower stems after flowering if a tidy appearance is preferred.
  • Leave flower plumes in place during autumn and winter for additional texture.
  • Cut back all dead foliage and stems in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
  • Remove damaged or yellowing leaves throughout the growing season.
  • Divide overcrowded clumps every few years to encourage healthy growth.
