Planting Canna ‘President’

• Plant overview: Canna ‘President’ is a striking, tender perennial grown from a rhizome rather than a true bulb. It is valued for its large, vivid red flowers and lush green foliage, making it ideal for borders, containers, and tropical-style displays.

• When to plant:

  • Plant outdoors from late April to May, once all risk of frost has passed.

  • In colder areas, rhizomes can be started earlier indoors in pots from March to give a head start.

• Site selection:

  • Choose a warm, sheltered position in full sun for best flowering.

  • Cannas thrive in bright, open locations where they receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

• Soil preparation:

  • Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.

  • Improve soil with generous amounts of well-rotted compost or organic matter before planting.

• Planting depth and spacing:

  • Plant rhizomes horizontally, 5–10cm deep.

  • Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart to allow for their strong, upright growth habit.

• Container planting:

  • Use a large pot with good drainage holes.

  • A loam-based compost with added organic matter is ideal to support vigorous growth.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Cannas are thirsty plants and require regular watering throughout the growing season.

  • Keep soil consistently moist, especially during hot or dry weather, but avoid waterlogging.

• Feeding:

  • Feed every 2–3 weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser once growth is established.

  • Regular feeding encourages larger leaves and more prolific flowering.

• Mulching:

  • Apply a thick mulch of compost or well-rotted manure in early summer to conserve moisture and enrich the soil.

• Staking and support:

  • In exposed sites, tall stems may benefit from light staking to prevent wind damage.

• Deadheading and tidying:

  • Remove spent flower heads promptly to encourage continued flowering.

  • Cut back damaged or yellowing leaves to keep plants looking tidy and healthy.

• Pests and problems:

  • Watch for slugs and snails, particularly when shoots are young.

  • Cannas are generally disease-resistant, but poor drainage can lead to rhizome rot.

Winter Care, Lifting, and Replanting

• Frost protection:

  • Canna ‘President’ is not frost-hardy and needs protection in cold climates.

  • After the first light frost blackens the foliage, cut stems back to 10–15cm.

• Lifting rhizomes:

  • Carefully lift the rhizomes using a fork, taking care not to damage them.

  • Shake off excess soil and allow them to dry for a day in a frost-free place.

• Winter storage:

  • Store rhizomes in trays or boxes filled with dry compost, sand, or wood shavings.

  • Keep in a cool, dark, frost-free location at around 5–10°C.

• Overwintering in containers:

  • Pots can be moved into a greenhouse, shed, or garage and kept just barely moist.

  • Do not allow compost to dry out completely, but avoid watering heavily.

• Replanting:

  • In spring, inspect rhizomes and discard any that show signs of rot.

  • Large clumps can be divided before replanting to create new plants.

• Garden impact:

  • With proper care, Canna ‘President’ will return each year, providing bold colour and structure from midsummer until autumn.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
