Planting Lily ‘Josephine’

• Plant overview: Lily ‘Josephine’ is a striking Oriental lily, producing large, fragrant blooms in soft pink tones with elegant markings. It is ideal for borders, patio containers, and cut flower gardens, where both its beauty and perfume can be fully appreciated.

• When to plant:

  • Plant bulbs in spring (March to April) or autumn (September to October) when soil conditions are workable.

  • Spring planting is often preferred in colder areas to reduce the risk of winter damage.

• Site selection:

  • Choose a sunny to lightly shaded position.

  • Lilies prefer their flowers in sun but their roots kept cool, so some light shade at soil level is beneficial.

• Soil preparation:

  • Plant in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil.

  • Improve planting areas with garden compost or leaf mould.

  • Good drainage is essential, as lily bulbs can rot in waterlogged conditions.

• Planting depth and spacing:

  • Plant bulbs at a depth of approximately 15–20cm, roughly three times the height of the bulb.

  • Space bulbs 20–30cm apart to allow good air circulation and strong growth.

• Container planting:

  • Lily ‘Josephine’ grows well in deep containers.

  • Use a free-draining compost, ideally mixed with grit, and ensure pots have adequate drainage holes.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well after planting to settle the soil.

  • During active growth, keep soil evenly moist but never saturated.

  • Containers may require more frequent watering during warm weather.

• Feeding:

  • Feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser.

  • Feeding supports strong stems, large flowers, and good bulb development.

• Mulching:

  • Apply a mulch of compost or bark around the base of plants to keep roots cool and retain moisture.

  • Mulching also helps suppress weeds.

• Staking and support:

  • Tall flower stems may need staking, particularly in exposed or windy locations.

  • Insert supports early to avoid damaging bulbs later.

• Deadheading:

  • Remove spent flowers to keep plants tidy and prevent energy being wasted on seed production.

  • Do not remove the stem or leaves while they remain green.

• Pests and diseases:

  • Watch for lily beetle, aphids, and slugs, especially on young growth.

  • Good air circulation and hygiene help reduce fungal problems.

Flowering, Aftercare, and Longevity

• Flowering period:

  • Lily ‘Josephine’ typically flowers from mid to late summer, depending on planting time and conditions.

  • Blooms are long-lasting and highly fragrant.

• Cut flower use:

  • Excellent as a cut flower.

  • Cut stems early in the morning when buds are just opening, leaving at least one-third of the stem and foliage on the plant.

• After flowering:

  • Remove faded blooms promptly, but allow foliage to die back naturally.

  • This enables the bulb to store energy for the following season.

• Winter care:

  • Lily ‘Josephine’ is generally hardy in well-drained soil.

  • In heavy or wet soils, apply a winter mulch or grow in containers that can be moved to shelter.

• Container overwintering:

  • Pots can be left outdoors if drainage is excellent, or moved to a sheltered, frost-free position during very cold spells.

• Longevity and division:

  • Lilies can remain undisturbed for several years.

  • If clumps become crowded or flowering declines, lift and divide bulbs in autumn.

• Replanting:

  • Replant immediately at the same depth, improving soil if necessary.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
