Planting Begonia Double Mixed Colours
-
Plant overview: Begonia Double Mixed Colours produces large, fully double blooms in a wide range of rich and pastel shades. These tender tuberous begonias are ideal for containers, hanging baskets, window boxes, and sheltered borders, where their long flowering season provides reliable summer colour.
-
When to plant:
-
Start tubers indoors from February to March to get a head start.
-
Plant outdoors from late April to May, once all danger of frost has passed.
-
-
Preparing the tubers:
-
Tubers are flat or slightly concave on one side and should be planted with the hollow side facing upwards.
-
Pot up initially in shallow trays or pots using free-draining compost.
-
-
Site selection:
-
Choose a bright but sheltered position.
-
Begonias prefer light shade or morning sun with protection from strong midday sun and wind.
-
-
Soil and compost:
-
Use a light, well-drained, fertile compost.
-
In borders, improve soil with organic matter to retain moisture while allowing good drainage.
-
-
Planting depth and spacing:
-
Cover tubers lightly with compost when starting indoors.
-
When planting out, space plants 25–30cm apart.
-
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
-
Watering:
-
Water regularly to keep compost evenly moist, particularly during warm weather.
-
Avoid waterlogging and do not allow plants to sit in standing water.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Begin feeding once buds appear, using a high-potassium liquid fertiliser every 10–14 days.
-
Regular feeding supports strong growth and continuous flowering.
-
-
Deadheading and grooming:
-
Remove faded flowers and damaged leaves regularly to keep plants tidy and encourage new blooms.
-
-
Mulching:
-
A light mulch helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool during hot spells.
-
-
Protection from weather:
-
Double-flowered begonias can be damaged by heavy rain and strong winds.
-
Move containers to shelter during poor weather where possible.
-
-
Pests and problems:
-
Watch for vine weevil larvae in pots and containers.
-
Good airflow helps prevent fungal diseases such as grey mould.
-
Flowering, Lifting, and Winter Storage
-
Flowering period:
-
Begonia Double Mixed Colours flowers from early summer until the first autumn frosts.
-
With regular feeding and deadheading, plants remain highly productive.
-
-
After flowering:
-
As temperatures drop in autumn, reduce watering and allow foliage to yellow naturally.
-
This helps the tubers prepare for dormancy.
-
-
Lifting tubers:
-
Before the first hard frost, lift tubers carefully from borders or containers.
-
Cut back stems to 5–8cm and allow tubers to dry for a few days in a frost-free place.
-
-
Winter storage:
-
Store tubers in trays or boxes filled with dry compost, sand, or peat-free alternatives.
-
Keep in a cool, dry, frost-free environment over winter.
-
-
Overwintering in containers:
-
Pots can be moved indoors once foliage has died back.
-
Keep compost barely moist and check occasionally for signs of rot.
-
-
Replanting:
-
In late winter or early spring, bring tubers back into warmth to restart growth.
-
Pot up and begin watering lightly until new shoots appear.
-
Begonia Double Mixed Colours offers exceptional value, providing months of vibrant colour when given shelter, consistent moisture, and careful winter storage
