Spray Painted Calluna Mix – Planting & Care Guide
About Spray Painted Calluna Mix
Spray Painted Calluna Mix is a decorative selection of Calluna (Heather) specially colour-treated to create a bright and eye-catching seasonal display. The natural foliage and flower spikes are spray painted in a mixture of vibrant colours, making these plants particularly popular for autumn and winter containers, window boxes, doorstep arrangements and seasonal displays.
Unlike naturally coloured Heather varieties, the striking colour of these plants comes from a decorative spray treatment. They are therefore best regarded primarily as a seasonal ornamental product rather than chosen for their natural flower colour.
Each mixed selection may contain different painted colours, depending on availability.
Planting Guide
Spray Painted Calluna can be displayed in its original pot or planted into seasonal containers.
- Position outdoors in full sun or partial shade.
- If planting, use acidic, well-drained soil or ericaceous compost.
- Plant at the same depth as the original root ball.
- Firm the compost gently around the plant.
- Water after planting.
- Ensure containers have adequate drainage holes.
- Avoid permanently waterlogged conditions.
Planting in Containers
These colourful Callunas are particularly effective in mixed autumn and winter arrangements.
- Use a container with good drainage.
- Fill with ericaceous compost where possible.
- Plant individually or combine several colours.
- Water after planting and keep the root ball from completely drying out.
- Raise containers slightly during very wet periods if drainage is poor.
They combine particularly well with Violas, Cyclamen, ornamental Brassicas, Ivy, Carex and other autumn/winter foliage plants.
Care & Maintenance
Although the above-ground growth has been decoratively treated, the plant itself still requires normal basic care.
- Check the compost regularly and water when required.
- Keep the root ball moderately moist but never saturated.
- Rain and watering may gradually affect the decorative painted finish.
- Avoid unnecessary overhead watering if you want to preserve the colour for as long as possible.
- Ensure good drainage during wet Irish winter weather.
- Remove any damaged or deteriorating growth when necessary.

Important Note About the Colour
The bright colouring on this product is artificially applied rather than the plant's natural flower or foliage colour.
- Colour may gradually fade or weather outdoors.
- Rain and repeated overhead watering can reduce the intensity of the painted finish.
- New growth will develop in the plant's natural colour, not the applied decorative colour.
- The exact colours supplied may vary within the mix.
- The decorative treatment means this product should not be confused with naturally coloured Calluna cultivars.
Pollinators & Wildlife
Natural flowering Calluna can be an excellent plant for bees and other pollinators. However, spray-painted Calluna should be treated primarily as a decorative seasonal product rather than being selected specifically for pollinator value.
For a wildlife-friendly Heather display, naturally flowering, untreated Calluna varieties are the better choice.
Seasonal Interest
Autumn: The brightly coloured treatment provides immediate impact when summer bedding begins to fade.
Winter: Plants can continue providing colourful structure in outdoor containers and seasonal arrangements.
Following Growth: Any fresh shoots that develop will show the Calluna's natural foliage colour rather than the spray-painted finish.
Common Problems
- Drying out: Small pots can dry surprisingly quickly, even during cool weather.
- Waterlogging: Saturated compost can damage the roots.
- Fading colour: The decorative coating naturally weathers over time.
- Poor drainage: Particularly problematic during prolonged wet Irish weather.
- Unsuitable compost: Calluna prefers acidic growing conditions, so ericaceous compost is recommended when repotting.
With its bright, unconventional colours and compact form, Spray Painted Calluna Mix is an excellent choice for creating instant impact in autumn and winter displays. Ideal for patio pots, window boxes, entrances and seasonal containers, it provides a fun splash of colour when the garden traditionally begins to quieten down
