Calluna vulgaris ‘Garden Girls’® Twin Care Guide
Calluna vulgaris ‘Garden Girls’® Twin is a compact, long-flowering Scotch heather specially bred for vibrant colour and lasting garden performance. This variety produces dense, upright stems covered in brightly coloured buds that stay decorative from late summer into winter, even in cold weather. Hardy, reliable, and low-maintenance, it’s perfect for pots, borders, rockeries, and seasonal displays. With its long-lasting bud colour and neat habit, ‘Garden Girls’® Twin is a great choice for adding cheerful autumn and winter interest.
Planting & Position
The right site and soil help this heather thrive and keep its vibrant colour.
-
Light requirements:
-
Prefers full sun for the best bud colour and dense growth.
-
Will tolerate very light shade but may flower less.
-
-
Soil:
-
Requires acidic, well-drained soil (ideal pH 4.5–6.0).
-
Avoid chalky or alkaline soils — plant in pots with ericaceous compost if your soil isn’t acidic.
-
-
Planting time:
-
Best planted in spring or early autumn when the soil is moist and mild.
-
-
Spacing:
-
Space 25–30 cm apart for a colourful carpet or low edging.
-
-
Containers:
-
Excellent for pots and planters. Use ericaceous compost and ensure good drainage.
-
Combine with other autumn favourites like cyclamen, skimmia, or ornamental grasses for mixed seasonal pots.
-
Care & Maintenance
Calluna vulgaris ‘Garden Girls’® Twin is very low-maintenance but benefits from some simple seasonal care.
-
Watering:
-
Keep soil evenly moist during the first year after planting.
-
Once established, it’s drought-tolerant but will look better with occasional watering in dry spells.
-
In pots, check moisture regularly — avoid letting compost dry out completely.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Feed in spring with an ericaceous fertiliser to encourage fresh growth and vibrant colour.
-
Container plants benefit from monthly liquid feed during the growing season.
-
-
Pruning:
-
Lightly trim back faded flower spikes in spring, just above the new green growth.
-
Avoid cutting into old wood, as this can stop regrowth.
-
-
Mulching:
-
Apply a mulch of ericaceous compost, leaf mould, or pine needles in spring to conserve moisture and keep soil acidic.
-
-
Pests & diseases:
-
Generally pest- and disease-free.
-
Occasionally susceptible to root rot if planted in poorly drained soil.
-
-
Hardiness:
-
Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland, tolerating frost and winter winds.
-
Design Uses & Seasonal Interest

-
Seasonal impact:
-
Late summer to winter: Colourful bud spikes remain bright for months, even in frost and rain.
-
Spring: Fresh green growth emerges after trimming, ready for another season.
-
-
Low-maintenance style:
-
Keeps a neat, compact shape with just one light prune each year.
-
Reliable colour even when other plants are fading.
-
-
Wildlife value:
-
Provides some shelter and late nectar for pollinators (when buds open slightly).
-
In summary: Calluna vulgaris ‘Garden Girls’® Twin is a hardy, low-maintenance heather that delivers vibrant, long-lasting colour from late summer through winter.
