Planting Calluna vulgaris ‘Alicia’

Calluna vulgaris ‘Alicia’ is a compact evergreen heather valued for its fine foliage and long-lasting pale or white flower buds. As a bud-flowering variety, its buds remain closed and retain their colour for an extended period, providing dependable interest through autumn and into winter. It is ideal for containers, rock gardens, border edges, banks and mass-planted seasonal displays.

  • Choose an open position in full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth, abundant buds and healthy foliage.

  • Light partial shade is tolerated, but plants grown in heavy shade may become loose, greener and less floriferous.

  • Select a site with good airflow while avoiding locations exposed to severe, drying winds.

  • Plant in acidic, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Calluna generally performs best at a soil pH between approximately 4.5 and 6.

  • Avoid chalky or strongly alkaline ground. Where the garden soil is unsuitable, grow ‘Alicia’ in a container filled with fresh ericaceous compost.

  • Water the plant thoroughly before removing it from its pot. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and approximately the same depth.

  • Gently loosen any tightly matted outer roots without breaking apart the main root system.

  • Position the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil. Backfill carefully, firm gently and water generously.

  • Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart, depending on how quickly a connected carpet of foliage is required.

  • Apply a light mulch of composted pine bark or leaf mould, keeping it away from the crown and lower stems.

Watering, Feeding and Seasonal Care

Calluna ‘Alicia’ has a fine, fibrous root system that can dry quickly before the plant becomes established. It requires reliable moisture but will decline in waterlogged soil.

  • Water regularly throughout the first growing season. Apply water slowly around the entire root area rather than wetting only the surface.

  • Continue watering established plants during prolonged dry weather, particularly while buds are developing.

  • Use collected rainwater whenever possible. In hard-water areas, repeated use of alkaline tap water can gradually raise the soil or compost pH.

  • Check container-grown plants frequently because pots may dry quickly during sunny, windy or unexpectedly mild weather.

  • Water containers thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the base. Empty saucers and decorative outer pots promptly.

  • Reduce watering during cool, wet periods, but do not allow the root ball to become completely dry.

  • Apply a small amount of fertiliser formulated for ericaceous plants in spring if growth appears weak.

  • Avoid high-nitrogen or excessive feeding, which can produce soft, open growth and reduce the quality of the autumn display.

  • Renew the acidic organic mulch annually to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and help maintain suitable soil conditions.

  • Protect exposed container plants during prolonged severe frost by insulating the pot or moving it to a sheltered outdoor position.

Pruning and Ongoing Maintenance

Light annual pruning prevents Calluna ‘Alicia’ from becoming woody, open and bare in the centre. Correct timing helps preserve its compact shape and future bud display.

  • Prune in spring after the decorative winter display has finished and before strong new growth develops.

  • Use clean shears or secateurs to remove the old flower spikes and lightly shorten the leafy growth beneath them.

  • Follow the plant’s natural rounded outline rather than cutting it into a flat or rigid shape.

  • Avoid cutting deeply into old, bare wood because Calluna may not produce new shoots from leafless stems.

  • Remove dead, damaged, diseased or frost-blackened shoots whenever they become apparent.

  • Hand-weed carefully around the plant. Deep hoeing or cultivation can damage its shallow, fibrous roots.

  • Maintain adequate spacing and airflow to reduce grey mould and fungal problems during damp weather.

  • Inspect foliage for spider mites and scale insects, although healthy outdoor plants rarely experience serious infestations.

  • Brown foliage may indicate drought, waterlogging, frost damage, alkaline soil or root disease. Check moisture and drainage before feeding.

  • Remove and replace plants that have become extensively woody and bare, as severe renovation pruning is unlikely to restore a compact form.

  • Repot container specimens every two or three years using fresh ericaceous compost and a slightly larger pot with reliable drainage.

  • Combine ‘Alicia’ with other acid-loving plants that share similar light, moisture and soil requirements.

  • With full sun, acidic soil, dependable moisture and annual spring pruning, Calluna vulgaris ‘Alicia’ will provide compact evergreen texture and a long-lasting pale autumn and winter display
