Campanula muralis – A Cheerful Carpet of Purple Stars

The Campanula muralis, often known as the Dalmatian Bellflower, is one of the most popular and reliable perennial groundcovers. Loved for its trailing habit and masses of violet-purple star-shaped blooms, it creates a vibrant carpet of colour from early summer right into autumn. Its spreading nature makes it particularly valuable for softening the edges of walls, filling gaps between paving stones, or trailing from containers.

This tough, low-growing perennial is easy to grow and requires little maintenance, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners. Hardy and dependable, Campanula muralis is a great way to add a splash of long-lasting colour to sunny borders, rockeries, or patios.

General Information

Campanula muralis is native to the Dalmatian region of Croatia, where it thrives in rocky crevices and walls – a clue to its versatility in gardens.

  • Habit: Low-growing, mat-forming perennial with trailing stems.

  • Height & spread: Grows 10–15cm tall, spreading up to 50cm wide.

  • Foliage: Small, rounded, bright green leaves that form a dense cushion of foliage.

  • Flowers: Abundant, star-shaped blooms in deep violet-purple; each around 2–3cm across.

  • Flowering season: Long flowering period from June through September, sometimes longer in mild years.

  • Position: Prefers full sun to light partial shade; more flowers in sunnier positions.

  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential; tolerates poor, rocky, or sandy soils.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland, tolerating frost and cold winters.

  • Uses: Perfect for rockeries, groundcover, walls, between paving stones, edging, or trailing from containers and window boxes.

With its long flowering season and cheerful blooms, this versatile bellflower is perfect for brightening up even the smallest of spaces.

Care Guide

Campanula muralis is extremely easy to care for and thrives in spots where many other plants struggle.

Planting

  • When to plant: Best in spring or early autumn, though container-grown plants can be planted year-round.

  • Depth & spacing: Plant at the same depth as in the pot; space 25–30cm apart for coverage.

  • Preparation: Add grit or sand to heavy soils to improve drainage, as wet roots can cause dieback.

Watering & Feeding

  • Water regularly during the first year to help plants establish.

  • Once established, it is drought-tolerant and rarely needs extra watering except in prolonged dry periods.

  • Feeding is not essential, but a light application of liquid fertiliser during flowering will encourage even more blooms.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Deadhead or lightly trim spent flowers to extend the blooming period.

  • After flowering, shear plants back to keep them compact and encourage fresh growth.

  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.

Protection

  • Fully hardy and tolerant of frost.

  • In containers, protect roots from excessive waterlogging in winter by ensuring good drainage.

  • Generally pest- and disease-free, though slugs may occasionally nibble young shoots.
