    Description

    Description and Characteristics

Campanula persicifolia 'Coerulea', commonly known as Peach-leaved Bellflower 'Coerulea', is a graceful, upright perennial prized for its airy habit, sky-blue bell-shaped flowers, and long-lasting summer display. As a cultivar of Campanula persicifolia, this selection is distinguished by its clear blue blooms that rise above neat clumps of narrow, glossy green foliage, resembling the leaves of a peach tree—hence the name.

‘Coerulea’ produces tall, wiry stems with large, outward-facing bellflowers from early to mid-summer, often blooming for 4–6 weeks. Its vertical form makes it ideal for cottage gardens, naturalistic plantings, and border backdrops, where it adds height without heaviness. The flowers also make excellent cut flowers and are attractive to a variety of pollinators.

It typically grows to a height of 75–100 cm, with a basal clump spread of around 30–40 cm, forming a tidy presence in mixed beds. With its soft colouring and movement in the breeze, 'Coerulea' is particularly effective planted in drifts or naturalised settings.

    • Airy spires of light blue bell-shaped flowers

    • Flowering season: June to July

    • Height: 75–100 cm; Spread: 30–40 cm

    • Upright, clump-forming habit with slender, peach-like leaves

    • Attracts bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators

    • Excellent for cottage gardens, borders, and cutting

    Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Campanula persicifolia 'Coerulea' is easy to grow and adaptable, thriving in a range of well-drained soils and climates. It prefers sun to light shade, is moderately drought-tolerant once established, and benefits from deadheading and occasional division.

    • Light Requirements:

      • Performs best in full sun to partial shade

      • In hotter climates, prefers afternoon shade to prevent wilting

    • Soil Preferences:

      • Grows in moist, well-drained soil

      • Tolerates a range of soil types, including loam, sandy, or chalky soils

      • Best in neutral to slightly alkaline pH

    • Watering Needs:

      • Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year

      • Established plants are moderately drought-tolerant, especially in cooler climates

      • Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser

      • Topdress with compost annually to enrich the soil

    • Deadheading and Pruning:

      • Deadhead faded flowers to encourage extended bloom

      • Cut back flower stems to the base after flowering to tidy up the plant

      • In early spring, remove any dead foliage to make room for new growth

    • Propagation:

      • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to maintain vigour

      • Can also be grown from seed—plants flower in the second year

    • Winter Care:

      • Hardy in Zones 3–8 (RHS H7) – fully frost-hardy

      • No special winter protection needed in most climates
