Planting Conditions and Site Requirements

• Light Requirements: Campsis radicans ‘Indian Summer’ thrives in full sun. A minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for abundant flowering. It will tolerate light shade but may flower less vigorously.

• Soil Preferences: Grows well in a wide range of soils, but prefers moist, well-drained soil. Enrich poor or sandy soils with compost to boost fertility and water retention.

• Moisture Needs: Requires regular watering when young, but once established it becomes drought-tolerant. Water deeply during prolonged dry periods to encourage strong root growth.

• Planting Site: Ideal for planting against walls, fences, trellises, or pergolas. It needs a strong support structure as it is a vigorous, self-clinging climber with aerial rootlets.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn, giving the plant time to establish roots before extreme temperatures.

• Spacing: Plant at least 3 to 5 feet from other plants or structures, allowing ample space for its mature spread and good air circulation.

Seasonal Care, Pruning, and Maintenance

• Watering: Water regularly in the first season after planting. Once established, it is low maintenance and needs minimal watering except during extreme drought.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage growth and flower production. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, as these may promote foliage at the expense of blooms.

• Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch mulch layer around the base in spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil.

• Pruning: Prune hard in late winter or early spring to control size and shape. Remove weak or dead stems and cut back lateral branches to a few buds to encourage flowering shoots.

• Training: Tie in young shoots to supports as needed. It climbs by clinging to surfaces, but early guidance will help it establish in the desired direction.

• Pest and Disease Issues: Generally pest-free and low-maintenance. Occasionally prone to aphids or scale—treat with insecticidal soap if needed. Avoid overly wet soil to prevent root rot.

• Invasiveness: ‘Indian Summer’ is a non-invasive cultivar, less aggressive than standard trumpet vines, making it more suitable for smaller gardens or confined spaces.

Flowers, Foliage, and Landscape Uses

• Flowering Time: Produces showy, trumpet-shaped flowers from mid to late summer into early autumn. Extended blooming period compared to many other trumpet vine varieties.

• Flower Color: Striking apricot-orange to salmon-pink blooms, up to 3 inches long, which stand out vividly against green foliage.

• Attracts Wildlife: A magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Ideal for pollinator-friendly gardens.

• Foliage: Features pinnate, bright green leaves with a slightly glossy finish. Deciduous foliage provides texture and interest even before flowering begins.

• Size and Growth Habit: Reaches 8–12 feet tall and spreads 4–6 feet wide in 5–10 years. Fast-growing but more compact and manageable than the species.

• Design Uses: Perfect for cloaking fences, covering walls, adding vertical interest, or growing over arches and pergolas. Works well in both formal and naturalistic garden settings.

• Hardiness: Hardy in USDA Zones 6–9 (UK H5), tolerating temperatures down to -15°C (5°F). May need winter protection in colder zones or exposed sites.

• Container Suitability: Can be grown in a large container with strong support, though growth may be more restrained. Ensure excellent drainage and regular feeding.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
