Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Requires full sun for the best flowering performance and dense growth. Avoid deep shade as it reduces blooms.

• Soil Preferences: Thrives in well-drained soils—loamy, sandy, or light clay. Does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged conditions.

• pH Range: Grows well in neutral to slightly alkaline soils (pH 6.5–8.0).

• Moisture Needs: Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from occasional watering in prolonged dry periods.

• Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn so roots establish before extreme summer heat or winter cold.

• Spacing: Allow 2–3 metres between plants for mature spread and to ensure good airflow.

• Positioning Tips: Excellent for south- or west-facing walls, sunny borders, and coastal gardens. Works beautifully as a backdrop in mixed planting schemes.

• Shelter Needs: Prefers a sheltered site, protected from strong, cold winds which can damage buds and young shoots.

• Companion Planting: Combines well with drought-tolerant perennials and shrubs such as rosemary, lavender, cistus, and ornamental grasses.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well during the first growing season to help root establishment.

  • Once established, water only during extended dry spells.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong growth and flower production.

• Pruning:

  • For evergreen forms like ‘Blue Jeans’, prune lightly after flowering in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and remove spent blooms.

  • Avoid cutting into old wood, as Ceanothus rarely reshoots from bare stems.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–7 cm layer of garden compost or well-rotted manure in spring to retain moisture, enrich the soil, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the plant’s crown.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally resistant to pests and diseases; occasional aphid infestations can be treated with insecticidal soap.

• Winter Care: Hardy in most areas, but in colder inland regions, choose a sheltered microclimate and protect young plants during severe frost with horticultural fleece.

• Propagation: Can be propagated from semi-ripe cuttings taken in summer for best results.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
