Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun for maximum flower production and dense, healthy growth.

• Soil Preferences: Requires well-drained soil—loam, sandy loam, or light clay are ideal. Avoid heavy, waterlogged sites.

• pH Range: Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil (pH 6.5–8.0).

• Moisture Needs: Drought-tolerant once established, but young plants need regular watering during their first season.

• Planting Time: Plant in spring or early autumn so roots can establish before extremes of heat or frost.

• Spacing: Allow 2–3 metres between plants to accommodate mature spread and ensure airflow.

• Positioning Tips: Works beautifully as a wall shrub, sunny border plant, or focal specimen in coastal or Mediterranean-style gardens.

• Shelter Needs: Prefers a sheltered site protected from cold winds, which can damage buds and shoots.

• Companion Planting: Pairs well with other drought-tolerant species such as rosemary, lavender, cistus, and ornamental grasses.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Keep soil moist during the first year after planting to encourage strong root growth.

  • Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.

• Feeding: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertilizer in early spring to support vigorous growth and flower production.

• Pruning:

  • For evergreen types like ‘Victoria’, prune lightly after flowering in late spring or early summer to remove spent blooms and shape the plant.

  • Avoid cutting into old wood, as it rarely reshoots.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–7 cm mulch of garden compost or well-rotted manure in spring to retain moisture, enrich soil, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the crown.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest- and disease-free; occasional aphid infestations can be treated with insecticidal soap or a strong jet of water.

• Winter Care: Hardy in most regions, but in colder inland areas plant in a warm, sheltered position to protect against frost damage.

• Propagation: Best propagated from semi-ripe cuttings in summer for reliable results.

• Foliage: Small, glossy, dark green evergreen leaves provide structure and colour all year round.

• Flowers: Masses of deep blue, nectar-rich flowers in dense clusters appear from late spring to early summer, sometimes with a second lighter flush later in the season.

• Wildlife Benefits: An excellent source of nectar for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies during its blooming period.

  • Spectacular as a wall-trained shrub against south- or west-facing walls.

  • Ideal as a stand-alone specimen in sunny lawns or borders.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
