Planting Conditions and Ideal Location
-
Light Requirements: Requires full sun for best flowering and dense, healthy growth.
-
Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained soil—light sandy loam or gravelly soil is ideal. Poor, stony ground works well, but avoid heavy clay unless improved with grit or compost.
-
pH Range: Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0–7.5).
-
Moisture Needs: Drought-tolerant once mature but water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots.
-
Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn when conditions are mild and soil retains some warmth.
-
Spacing: Allow 1 metre between plants for good airflow and to accommodate natural spread.
-
Positioning Tips: Excellent for Mediterranean-style borders, gravel gardens, slopes, and coastal sites. Works well in sunny rockeries.
-
Shelter Needs: Hardy but appreciates protection from cold, drying winds in exposed areas.
-
Companion Planting: Pairs beautifully with lavender, rosemary, thyme, and ornamental grasses for a cohesive drought-tolerant planting scheme.
Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance
-
Watering:
-
Keep soil lightly moist for the first few months after planting.
-
Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells.
-
-
Feeding: Apply a light dressing of balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid overfeeding, which can cause excess foliage and fewer blooms.
-
Pruning:
-
Lightly trim immediately after flowering to maintain a compact, rounded shape and encourage fresh shoots.
-
Avoid cutting into old wood, as regrowth may be poor.
-
-
Mulching: Use a thin layer of gravel or grit mulch to aid drainage and suppress weeds. Avoid heavy, moisture-retaining organic mulches.
-
Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free and disease-resistant; main risk is root rot from poor drainage.
-
Winter Care: Hardy in well-drained soils; in colder or wetter regions, plant on a slope or raised bed for improved drainage.
-
Propagation: Best propagated from semi-ripe cuttings in late summer for reliable results.
Ornamental Features, Seasonal Interest, and Garden Uses
-
Foliage: Small, grey-green evergreen leaves provide attractive year-round texture and colour.
-
Flowers: Produces masses of magenta-pink blooms with bright yellow centres from late spring through midsummer. Each flower lasts just one day but is quickly replaced, creating a continuous display.
-
Fragrance: Foliage has a light, resinous aroma, especially in warm weather.
-
Wildlife Benefits: Flowers are rich in nectar, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
-
Ornamental Value: Combines vibrant flowers with compact evergreen foliage, making it an excellent low-maintenance feature for sunny gardens.
-
Garden Design Uses:
-
Perfect for rock gardens and Mediterranean borders.
-
Works well for ground cover on sunny banks and slopes.
-
Suitable for coastal planting due to salt tolerance.
-
Complements other drought-tolerant plants in mixed borders or gravel beds.
-
-
Growth and Size: Low-growing, spreading shrub reaching 30–45 cm in height with a spread of around 1 metre.
-
Longevity: Long-lived when grown in well-drained soil and pruned lightly each year.
-
Seasonal Appeal: Evergreen foliage provides structure in winter, while the vibrant summer blooms create a striking seasonal display.
