Description

Overview and Key Features

Coreopsis, commonly known as Tickseed, is a sun-loving, drought-tolerant perennial known for its long-lasting display of bright yellow daisy-like flowers. Popular with pollinators and gardeners alike, yellow Coreopsis varieties bring vibrant colour and carefree charm to borders, cottage gardens, and wildlife-friendly spaces.

Coreopsis comes in many forms—from tall, airy cultivars to compact mounding varieties—but all share a generous bloom period and an easy-going nature. They are perfect for low-maintenance gardening, containers, or mass planting.

  • Height: 30–70 cm depending on variety

  • Spread: 30–60 cm

  • Flowers: Daisy-like blooms in golden yellow, often with darker centres

  • Foliage: Fine, green to thread-like leaves depending on the type

  • Blooming period: June to September, sometimes longer

  • Habit: Upright, clump-forming

  • Common varieties: 'Sunray', 'Early Sunrise', 'Zagreb', 'Moonbeam' (though 'Moonbeam' is pale yellow)

Planting and Site Preferences

Coreopsis thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It is particularly valuable for dry sites, new plantings, or low-input landscapes.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Requires full sun (at least 6 hours per day)

    • Too much shade will reduce flowering and lead to leggy growth

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Tolerates a range of soils including sandy, rocky, and poor soils

    • Must have good drainage—does not like wet feet

    • Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH

  • Planting Tips:

    • Plant in spring after frost or in early autumn

    • Space plants 30–50 cm apart

    • Avoid rich soil which can encourage excessive foliage

Watering, Feeding, and Maintenance

Coreopsis is a low-maintenance perennial, requiring little attention once established.

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly after planting until established

    • Once mature, drought-tolerant—only water in prolonged dry spells

    • In containers, water when soil feels dry 2–3 cm below the surface

  • Feeding:

    • Minimal feeding required

    • Over-fertilising can lead to floppy growth and fewer flowers

    • Apply a light general-purpose feed in spring if needed

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Deadhead regularly to prolong blooming season

    • Trim lightly after main flowering flush to encourage rebloom

    • Cut back hard in autumn or early spring to rejuvenate the plant

Landscape Use and Companion Ideas

With its bold yellow colour, Coreopsis brightens up any planting scheme and combines well with a wide range of garden favourites.

  • Best Uses:

    • Borders, rockeries, wildlife gardens, and containers

    • Ideal for mass planting or filling gaps in mixed beds

    • Excellent as a cut flower with a long vase life

    • Works well in coastal gardens and xeriscaping

  • Companion Plants:

    • Pairs beautifully with Lavender, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Gaillardia, and ornamental grasses

    • Mix with purple and blue flowers for strong colour contrast

    • Combines well with silver foliage such as Artemisia or Senecio

Wildlife Benefits and Hardiness

  • Pollinator magnet: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland (RHS H7)

  • Deer and rabbit resistant in most cases

Long-Term Care and Propagation

  • Divide clumps every 2–3 years in spring or early autumn to maintain vigour

  • May self-seed lightly in ideal conditions—deadhead to control spread if needed

  • Cut back in late autumn or leave seed heads for winter interest and birds
