Crocosmia 'George Davidson' – Planting & Care Guide

About Crocosmia 'George Davidson'

Crocosmia 'George Davidson' is a beautiful clump-forming perennial renowned for its elegant arching stems and vibrant golden-yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. Flowering from mid to late summer, it provides a cheerful splash of colour and creates a striking contrast against its upright, sword-like green foliage.

Growing to approximately 60–90cm tall with a spread of 45–60cm, 'George Davidson' is slightly more compact than many other Crocosmia varieties, making it ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and patio containers. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects, while the long-lasting blooms make excellent cut flowers for floral arrangements.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in full sun or partial shade.
  • Choose a sheltered position protected from strong winds.
  • Prefers fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil.
  • Improve poor soils by incorporating compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.
  • Plant corms or container-grown plants with the crown approximately 8–10cm below the soil surface.
  • Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball and the appropriate depth.
  • Position the plant carefully and backfill with soil.
  • Firm the soil gently and water thoroughly after planting.
  • Apply a 5–8cm layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Space plants approximately 45–60cm apart to allow room for mature growth.

Care & Maintenance

Crocosmia 'George Davidson' is an easy-care perennial that provides reliable summer colour year after year.

  • Water regularly during the first growing season.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth.
  • Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.
  • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser.
  • Apply a high-potash fertiliser before flowering to encourage abundant blooms.
  • Refresh mulch annually to improve soil quality and retain moisture.
  • Remove weeds regularly from around the base.
  • Avoid disturbing established clumps unless they become overcrowded.
  • Water container-grown plants more frequently during warm weather.

Pruning

Very little pruning is required.

  • Remove spent flower stems after flowering.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally, as it stores energy for the following year's flowers.
  • Cut back dead foliage in late autumn or early spring.
  • Divide mature clumps every 4–5 years in spring if flowering declines.
  • Remove damaged or diseased leaves whenever necessary.
