Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Grows best in full sun but will tolerate light partial shade.

• Soil Preferences: Adapts to most soils—loam, sandy, or clay—as long as it’s well-drained.

• pH Range: Tolerant of slightly acidic to alkaline soils (pH 5.5–8.0).

• Moisture Needs: Prefers moist but well-drained conditions; avoid waterlogging.

• Planting Time: Best planted in autumn or spring, giving roots time to establish before summer heat or winter cold.

• Spacing: For hedges, plant 60–90 cm apart; for individual trees, space at least 3–4 metres apart to allow for mature spread.

• Positioning Tips: Commonly used for privacy screening, windbreaks, and boundary planting.

• Shelter Needs: Excellent tolerance to wind, making it suitable for exposed and coastal gardens.

• Container Growing: Can be grown in large containers for temporary screening, though best suited for open ground.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first 1–2 years until well established.

  • Mature trees are drought-tolerant but benefit from watering during prolonged dry spells.

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring to support healthy growth.

  • A light top-dressing of compost in autumn helps maintain soil health.

• Pruning:

  • Responds very well to trimming—essential for maintaining size and shape.

  • For hedges, trim 2–3 times per year during the growing season (April–August).

  • Avoid cutting into old brown wood, as new growth will not regenerate from it.

  • Always shape so the base is slightly wider than the top to ensure sunlight reaches all foliage.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm layer of bark or compost around the base in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally robust, though can be susceptible to cypress aphid, which causes browning in summer. Monitor regularly and treat promptly if spotted.

• Winter Care: Fully hardy; no winter protection required in most climates.

• Weed Control: Keep the base clear of weeds and grass, particularly in young plants, to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

• Foliage: Dense, evergreen foliage provides year-round colour and excellent privacy.

• Form: Tall, conical shape when left untrimmed; easily maintained as a formal hedge.

• Growth Rate and Size: Extremely fast-growing—up to 1 metre per year in ideal conditions. Can reach 15–20 metres if unpruned.

• Windbreak Benefits: Excellent at reducing wind speed, making gardens more sheltered and comfortable.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
