    Description

    Overview and Features

Dahlias are among the most striking and diverse summer-flowering plants, offering a dazzling range of colours, forms, and sizes. From petite pompons and decorative balls to dinner-plate blooms and cactus-style petals, dahlias are a garden staple for bold colour and vibrant borders. Flowering from mid-summer until the first frost, dahlias are valued for their long-lasting blooms and excellent cutting performance.

Varieties range in height from 30 cm to over 1.5 metres, and flower colours span almost every shade except true blue. There are numerous series and types including:

    • Decorative Dahlias – large, rounded blooms

    • Cactus and Semi-Cactus Dahlias – spiky, star-like petals

    • Ball and Pompon Dahlias – tightly packed spherical blooms

    • Bedding or Dwarf Dahlias (e.g. Gallery or XXL series) – compact, prolific, ideal for pots

    • Dinnerplate Dahlias – enormous flowers up to 25 cm across

    • Grown from tubers or potted starts

    • Flower from July to October

    • Perfect for borders, containers, and cutting gardens

    • Attract bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects

    Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Dahlias are moderately easy to grow but thrive best when given sun, warmth, and good soil. They are tender perennials, meaning they need protection in colder climates.

    • Light Requirements:

      • Require full sun (at least 6 hours/day)

      • Will not flower well in deep shade

    • Soil Preferences:

      • Prefer rich, well-drained soil

      • Work in compost or well-rotted manure before planting

      • Avoid soggy or poorly drained areas (tuber rot risk)

    • Watering:

      • Water deeply 2–3 times per week once established

      • Container-grown dahlias need more frequent watering

      • Avoid wetting foliage to prevent mildew

    • Feeding:

      • Use a high-potassium fertiliser (e.g. tomato feed) every 2 weeks during blooming

      • Avoid high nitrogen—it encourages leafy growth over flowers

    • Staking and Support:

      • Tall varieties need staking early in the season

      • Use bamboo canes or metal rings and tie as they grow

    • Deadheading and Pruning:

      • Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms

      • Pinch out tips when young to encourage bushiness

    • Overwintering:

      • In mild areas, mulch heavily in autumn and leave tubers in-ground

      • In cold areas, lift tubers after frost, dry them, and store in a frost-free place

    Seasonal Use and Garden Design

Dahlias are among the most rewarding summer plants, adding boldness, height, and colour to any design. Their diversity means there’s a dahlia for every garden style.

    • Flowering Time:

      • Mid-July to first frost (often late October)

    • Garden Applications:

      • Stunning in mixed borders, cottage gardens, and formal beds

      • Compact types are perfect for patio pots, troughs, and containers

      • Superb for cut flower arrangements

    • Companion Plants:

      • Pair with Salvia, Cosmos, Rudbeckia, Verbena bonariensis, Zinnia, and grasses

      • Combine with foliage plants like Heuchera or Coleus for contrast

    • Pests and Diseases:

      • Watch for slugs, aphids, and earwigs on young shoots

      • Powdery mildew may occur in humid conditions—ensure airflow
