Description

Description and General Information

  • Botanical Name: Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’

  • Common Name: Variegated Winter Daphne

  • Plant Type: Evergreen shrub prized for its striking foliage and intensely fragrant winter flowers.

  • Growth Habit: Rounded, bushy form with dense branching, typically growing to 1–1.5 metres tall and wide.

  • Foliage: Glossy, leathery, deep green leaves edged with golden-yellow margins, providing year-round ornamental interest.

  • Flowers: Clusters of small, tubular blooms in shades of deep pink to reddish-purple, with a paler centre.

  • Blooming Season: Late winter to early spring (January–March), offering valuable colour and fragrance when little else is in flower.

  • Fragrance: Intensely sweet, citrus-like perfume that can fill the garden air.

  • Ornamental Appeal: Combines year-round foliage colour, winter fragrance, and a neat form—perfect for patios, borders, and entrances.

  • Garden Uses: Ideal for courtyard gardens, containers, winter borders, or as a feature shrub near paths and doorways to enjoy its scent up close.

  • Special Note: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested—care should be taken in gardens with children or pets.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade; morning sun is fine but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves.

  • Soil Preferences: Needs moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil; dislikes heavy clay or very dry ground.

  • pH Range: Best in neutral to slightly acidic soils (pH 6.0–7.0).

  • Moisture Needs: Requires evenly moist soil—avoid letting it dry out completely, but do not overwater.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or early autumn to establish before extreme temperatures.

  • Spacing: Allow 1–1.2 metres between plants for airflow and mature spread.

  • Shelter Needs: Plant in a sheltered location protected from cold winds and excessive winter wet.

  • Container Growing: Excellent in large pots with loam-based compost and good drainage—perfect for placing near a seating area or doorway.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during the growing season.

    • Reduce watering slightly in winter, especially for container-grown plants.

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring, and top up in midsummer if needed.

  • Pruning:

    • Requires minimal pruning—remove faded flowers and any damaged or wayward stems immediately after flowering.

    • Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as regrowth may be slow or absent.

  • Mulching: Apply a 5 cm mulch layer of leaf mould, compost, or fine bark in spring to conserve moisture and enrich soil. Keep mulch away from the crown to prevent rot.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free; root rot can occur if drainage is poor—ensure planting site is free-draining.

  • Winter Care: Fully hardy in mild climates; in colder areas, protect from severe frost and avoid planting in frost pockets.

  • Weed Control: Keep the base free of weeds to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

  • Longevity: Long-lived if planted in the right conditions and left undisturbed—Daphnes dislike root disturbance.
