Overview and Distinct Features

Delphinium Delgenius™ 'Chantay' is a standout member of the Delgenius™ series, renowned for combining the romantic flower form of traditional delphiniums with improved branching, longer bloom time, and superior weather resistance. ‘Chantay’ features frilly, rose-pink double blooms with soft white centres, flowering in generous clusters atop upright stems.

Unlike older varieties, Delgenius delphiniums are bred to be more compact, bushier, and easier to manage in borders and containers. They’re also longer blooming, offering colour from early summer well into late summer or early autumn with proper deadheading.

• Height: 55–70 cm

• Spread: 40–50 cm

• Flower colour: Pink with white central eyes (double florets)

• Foliage: Deep green, deeply cut, and bushy

• Habit: Upright but sturdy; no staking usually needed

• Flowering time: June–September (with repeat flushes)

Planting and Growing Conditions

Light

• Requires full sun to flourish and produce strong, upright growth

• Can tolerate light dappled shade but may result in fewer blooms

Soil

• Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soils

• Performs well in neutral to slightly alkaline pH

• Avoid waterlogged conditions, which may cause crown rot

Planting Tips

• Best planted in spring or early autumn

• Space plants 40–50 cm apart to allow good air circulation

• Incorporate organic matter into planting holes to improve fertility and drainage

• Excellent for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and even large patio containers

Watering, Feeding, and Maintenance

Watering

• Requires regular watering, especially during dry spells

• Keep soil moist but not soggy—avoid overhead watering to minimise leaf mildew

Feeding

• Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring

• For extended flowering, feed every 2–3 weeks with a liquid fertiliser during summer

Deadheading and Pruning

• Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage a second or even third flush

• In autumn, cut back flower stems to the base after flowering ends

• In early spring, remove old stems to make way for fresh shoots

Support

• Delgenius varieties are bred to be sturdier, so staking is often unnecessary

• In very exposed gardens, a light support ring may help during windy conditions

‘Chantay’ is excellent for elegant borders, romantic planting schemes, and modern perennial beds thanks to its unusual colour and neat form.

Companion Plants

• Complements roses, Salvia nemorosa, Nepeta, and Astrantia

• Pairs beautifully with silver or blue-foliaged plants such as Artemisia or Festuca glauca

• Try with Alchemilla mollis, Campanula, or Heuchera for layered colour

Wildlife and Hardiness

• Pollinator-Friendly: Offers nectar to bees and butterflies

• Cut Flowers: Excellent vase life when harvested at half-open stage

• Hardiness: Hardy in most parts of the UK and Ireland (down to -15°C)

• Pest Watch: Protect from slugs and snails, especially in spring

• Disease Note: Ensure good airflow to prevent powdery mildew

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
