Overview and Features

Digiplexis 'Firecracker' is a spectacular hybrid perennial, developed from a cross between Digitalis (foxglove) and Isoplexis (Canary Island foxglove). It is part of the Illumination series, prized for its exotic appearance, extended bloom time, and robust performance in garden beds and containers.

This variety stands out with its spikes of tubular, fiery orange-red flowers with deep pink and golden throats. The vivid blooms rise above lush green, lance-shaped foliage, creating a striking vertical element in borders. Flowering begins in late spring and continues into autumn, especially with regular deadheading.

‘Firecracker’ typically grows to 90–100 cm tall and 40–50 cm wide, forming a tidy clump that is perfect for adding a tropical, architectural feel to sunny planting schemes.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Digiplexis 'Firecracker' thrives in warm, sunny spots with well-drained soil. It is moderately easy to grow if its need for warmth and drainage is met.

• Light Requirements:

  • Prefers full sun (6+ hours/day)

  • Can handle light shade, but flowering may be reduced

• Soil Preferences:

  • Needs fertile, well-drained soil

  • Avoid heavy clay or poorly draining areas

  • Excellent in raised beds or large containers

• Watering:

  • Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy

  • Water more frequently in containers or during dry periods

  • Mulch lightly to conserve moisture, avoiding the crown

• Feeding:

  • Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks

  • Alternatively, apply slow-release fertiliser in spring

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Deadhead regularly to promote continuous flowering

  • Cut back spent flower spikes to encourage new blooms

  • Treat as a tender perennial—lift and overwinter indoors where winters are cold

Seasonal Use and Garden Design

‘Firecracker’ brings long-season colour and dramatic vertical form to planting designs. With its bold tones, it is ideal for summer garden features and container displays.

  • From late May/June until first frost, with continuous reblooming

• Garden Design Applications:

  • Perfect in mixed borders, exotic-style gardens, or patio pots

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
