Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

• Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun, which promotes strong growth and the most vibrant silver-blue foliage.

• Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained soils, including sandy and loamy types; avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas.

• pH Range: Tolerates a wide range, from slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5).

• Moisture Needs: Enjoys moderate moisture during establishment but becomes drought-tolerant once mature.

• Planting Time: Best planted in spring after the risk of frost has passed, or in early autumn in milder climates.

• Spacing: Allow 2–3 metres of space for mature growth when planted as a specimen tree.

• Positioning Tips: Excellent as a specimen tree, cut-foliage plant, or in mixed borders. Can also be grown in large containers for patios.

• Shelter Needs: Hardy in mild areas; in colder locations, choose a sheltered site protected from strong, freezing winds.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water regularly during the first year to establish deep roots.

  • Once established, water only in prolonged dry spells.

  • Container plants need consistent moisture in summer but must never sit in waterlogged compost.

• Feeding: Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer in spring to support strong foliage growth.

• Pruning:

  • Lightly prune in late winter or early spring to encourage bushier growth and maintain shape.

  • Can be cut back harder for producing young stems with the most decorative foliage.

  • Remove damaged or crossing stems at any time of year.

• Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm mulch layer of bark, compost, or leaf mould in spring to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it away from the trunk.

• Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free and resilient; occasional leaf spots or insect activity are rare and not usually serious.

• Winter Care: Hardy down to about -8°C in sheltered positions; young plants in colder areas benefit from fleece protection in severe frost.

• Weed Control: Keep the base free of weeds and grass for best growth.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
