Euonymus japonicus 'Aureus' Care Guide

Euonymus japonicus 'Aureus' is a hardy, evergreen shrub known for its glossy green leaves edged in golden yellow. It provides year-round color and structure, making it an excellent choice for borders, hedging, containers, and low-maintenance gardens. It is a versatile and resilient plant, tolerating coastal conditions, urban pollution, and different soil types.

Planting and Positioning

• Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. More sunlight enhances the golden variegation, while shadier spots may result in greener foliage.
• Soil: Prefers well-draining soil, but can tolerate a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and chalky soils.
• Container Growing: Suitable for pots and containers; use a good-quality, free-draining compost.
• Hedging & Borders: Can be used as a low hedge or mixed with other shrubs. Space plants 40–60cm (16–24 inches) apart for a dense hedge.
• Coastal & Urban Tolerance: Perfect for coastal gardens due to its wind and salt resistance and thrives in urban environments with pollution tolerance.

Watering, Feeding, and General Maintenance

• Watering:

  • Water well after planting to help roots establish.
  • Once established, it is drought-tolerant, needing only occasional watering in prolonged dry spells.
  • Avoid overwatering, especially in heavy clay soils, as this can cause root rot.

• Feeding:

  • In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage healthy growth.
  • A mulch of organic compost around the base in spring helps retain moisture and improve soil quality.

• Mulching:

  • Apply a thin layer of mulch around the plant base to help with moisture retention and weed suppression.

Pruning and Long-Term Care

• Pruning:

  • Requires minimal pruning but benefits from light trimming in spring or summer to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.
  • Remove any damaged, diseased, or unwanted growth to keep the plant looking neat.
  • For hedging, trim twice a year (spring and late summer) for a dense, formal shape.

• Overwintering:

  • Fully hardy in most climates but may suffer leaf scorch in extreme cold. If grown in pots, move to a sheltered area in harsh winters.
  • Mulch around the base to protect roots from severe frost.

• Pests and Diseases:

  • Generally trouble-free, but keep an eye out for scale insects or aphids. If necessary, treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
  • Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent powdery mildew or leaf spot diseases in humid conditions.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
