Botanical Name: Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck Purple’
-
Common Name: Dawyck Purple Beech
-
Plant Type: Deciduous ornamental tree
-
Origin: Cultivar of the European Beech, selected for its narrow, upright growth and deep purple foliage.
-
Growth Habit: Columnar form, typically reaching 12–18 metres in height with a spread of only 2–4 metres, making it ideal for narrower spaces or avenue planting.
-
Foliage: Rich, glossy purple leaves in spring and summer, turning a mix of copper, bronze, and gold in autumn before falling.
-
Flowers: Small, inconspicuous catkins in spring.
-
Fruit: Produces beech nuts (mast) in autumn, a valuable food source for wildlife.
-
Seasonal Interest: Striking foliage colour through the growing season, complemented by a strong vertical form and impressive autumn tones.
-
Garden Uses: Perfect for formal avenues, urban gardens, narrow boundaries, architectural planting, or as a dramatic focal point.
-
Wildlife Benefits: Provides shelter and food for birds, small mammals, and insects.
-
Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland; withstands frost and cold winters well.
Planting Conditions and Ideal Location
-
Light Requirements: Performs best in full sun to partial shade; deep foliage colour is richest in full sun.
-
Soil Preferences: Thrives in fertile, well-drained soil; tolerates chalk, loam, and clay if not waterlogged.
-
pH Range: Neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 6.5–7.5).
-
Moisture Needs: Prefers moist but well-drained soil; avoid both waterlogging and prolonged drought.
-
Planting Time: Best planted in autumn or early spring while dormant; container-grown plants can be planted year-round in mild weather.
-
Spacing: For avenue planting, space 3–5 metres apart; allow sufficient root space from buildings and hard surfaces.
-
Shelter Needs: Tolerates exposed inland sites but avoid extreme coastal winds with salt spray.
-
Companion Planting: Pairs well with hornbeam, silver birch, or ornamental cherries for contrasting seasonal colour and texture.
-
Urban Tolerance: Suitable for city planting; copes with moderate air pollution.
Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance
-
Watering:
-
Water regularly during the first 1–2 years after planting to establish deep roots.
-
Mature trees are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.
-
-
Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring for young trees to encourage healthy growth. Mature specimens typically need no additional feeding.
-
Pruning:
-
Minimal pruning required; remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter while dormant.
-
Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the tree’s natural columnar shape.
-
-
Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm mulch layer of compost or well-rotted manure around the base each spring to conserve moisture and improve soil fertility, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
-
Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally robust; may occasionally experience aphids, caterpillars, or fungal leaf spots, but rarely serious.
-
Winter Care: Fully hardy; no protection needed. In particularly cold winters, young trees may benefit from wind protection until well established.
-
Weed Control: Keep the base weed-free during establishment to reduce competition for nutrients and water.
-
Longevity: A long-lived ornamental tree, Fagus sylvatica ‘Dawyck Purple’ can thrive for many decades, providing structure, colour, and elegance to the landscape.
