Description

Site Selection and Planting Conditions

  • Light Requirements: Fatsia japonica ‘Spider’s Web’ grows best in partial to full shade. It tolerates a small amount of morning sun but prefers dappled light or deep shade for best variegation. Too much direct sun can cause leaf scorch or fading.

  • Soil Preferences: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It can grow in a wide range of soils including clay, loam, or sandy types, provided drainage is good.

  • Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil, especially during dry periods. It is not drought tolerant, particularly when young or grown in containers.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or autumn, allowing time for the roots to establish in cooler, moist conditions. Avoid planting in frozen or waterlogged soil.

  • Spacing: Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart to accommodate mature spread and encourage airflow. This spacing also prevents competition for nutrients and water.

  • Shelter Considerations: Best planted in a sheltered location, protected from strong winds and frost pockets. Ideal under tree canopies, in courtyards, or along north-facing walls.

Routine Care and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Mature plants are moderately drought-tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture. Container-grown specimens require more frequent watering.

  • Feeding: Feed in spring with a general-purpose fertilizer or organic compost to support lush foliage growth. Container plants may benefit from monthly feeding during the growing season.

  • Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch mulch layer around the base to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Avoid direct contact with the stem.

  • Pruning and Tidying: Minimal pruning is required. Remove damaged or yellowing leaves at the base as needed. Older stems can be cut back in early spring to encourage fresh growth.

  • Container Growth: Performs very well in large containers with good drainage. Ideal for patios and shaded balconies. Choose a high-quality compost and ensure pots do not dry out.

  • Cold Protection: Hardy in USDA Zones 7–10 (UK H4), but in colder regions, provide winter protection using fleece or by bringing container plants into a sheltered spot.

  • Pests and Diseases: Generally pest-free. Occasionally affected by scale insects or spider mites—treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot.

Ornamental Features and Landscape Use

  • Foliage Description: ‘Spider’s Web’ is prized for its large, palmate, deeply lobed leaves with dramatic white and silvery variegation, resembling a webbed or frosted pattern. The foliage remains evergreen year-round, adding structure and interest.

  • Growth Habit and Size: A slow to moderate grower reaching 4–6 feet in height and spread, forming a rounded, bushy shape. Can grow taller in sheltered, mild areas.

  • Flowers and Berries: Produces small, creamy white flowers in late autumn, followed by shiny black berries in winter—both are attractive to pollinators and birds.

  • Seasonal Interest: Offers year-round visual appeal with its bold, variegated leaves. Brightens up dark corners and brings contrast to woodland or shade gardens.

  • Design Uses: Excellent for tropical-themed borders, woodland plantings, or modern garden designs. Combines well with ferns, hostas, heuchera, and evergreen shrubs.

  • Indoor Use: Can also be grown indoors in bright, indirect light. Mist regularly to maintain humidity and keep leaves clean and healthy.
