Description and Characteristics

Fuchsia ‘Garden News’ is a compact, bushy deciduous shrub well-known for its abundant, richly coloured flowers and prolonged blooming season. This hardy fuchsia produces profuse, pendent blooms with rose-pink sepals and deep purple corollas, creating a vivid, eye-catching display from late spring until the first frosts.

Growing to approximately 40–60 cm in height and spread, ‘Garden News’ has a naturally rounded shape, making it ideal for border fronts, containers, and seasonal planting schemes. It is one of the hardy fuchsia cultivars (RHS H4), meaning it can survive moderate frosts and will return reliably in spring in many UK and Irish gardens.

The plant’s bushy growth and exceptional flower coverage make it perfect for cottage gardens, informal beds, and wildlife-friendly spaces, where it provides long-lasting colour and supports pollinators.

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Fuchsia ‘Garden News’ is a low-maintenance, easy-to-grow perennial that thrives in moderate sun or part shade, with moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil. Regular deadheading and light pruning help maintain a bushy shape and extend its flowering period.

• Light Requirements:

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade

  • In hotter climates, provide afternoon shade to protect flowers from fading

• Soil Preferences:

  • Performs best in moist but well-drained, fertile soil

  • Enriched loam, sandy loam, or garden compost is ideal

  • Suitable for borders or large containers with good drainage

• Watering Needs:

  • Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season

  • Water containers more frequently, especially in hot weather

  • Avoid waterlogging—good drainage is essential

• Feeding:

  • Apply a balanced fertiliser every 2–3 weeks from spring through summer

  • Use a high-potash feed (e.g. tomato fertiliser) to support flowering

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Pinch out tips of young plants to encourage bushy growth

  • Deadhead regularly to extend blooming

  • In early spring, cut back to a low framework once frost risk has passed and new shoots appear

• Winter Care:

  • Hardy to approx. -5°C to -10°C (RHS H4)

  • In colder regions, apply a mulch over the crown in autumn

  • Container-grown plants can be moved to a frost-free greenhouse or porch for winter protection

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
