Description and Characteristics

Fuchsia ‘Mrs Popple’ is one of the most popular and reliable hardy fuchsia cultivars, celebrated for its vivid flowers, strong growth, and long flowering period. This vigorous deciduous shrub produces abundant pendant blooms with bright red sepals and deep violet-purple corollas, offering bold contrast and high visibility even from a distance. The flowers appear from late spring to the first frosts, providing continuous colour for many months.

The plant has an upright, arching habit and forms a medium to large shrub, typically growing to 90–120 cm in height and up to 90 cm in spread, though it can reach larger proportions in sheltered spots or over time. 'Mrs Popple' is known for being tough, floriferous, and low maintenance, making it a favourite in traditional cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, and mixed shrub borders.

Its nectar-rich flowers are loved by bees and pollinators, and its size and resilience make it useful as a back-of-border filler, informal hedge, or standalone specimen.

  • Upright, arching hardy fuchsia with red and violet pendant blooms

  • Flowers from late May through October

  • Mature size: 90–120 cm height and spread, larger if unpruned

  • Deciduous: dies back in winter and regrows in spring

  • Excellent for borders, hedging, wildlife gardens, and containers

  • Attracts bees, hoverflies, and other pollinators

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Fuchsia ‘Mrs Popple’ is easy to grow and very forgiving, tolerating a wide range of soils and light conditions. It thrives with minimal care and benefits from regular feeding and pruning.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Grows well in full sun to partial shade

    • In hotter climates, provide afternoon shade to protect from heat stress

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Prefers moist but well-drained, fertile soil

    • Will grow in most soil types, including loam, sandy loam, and compost-enriched beds

    • Tolerates mildly acidic to neutral pH

  • Watering Needs:

    • Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season

    • Avoid waterlogging—ensure good drainage

    • Water container plants frequently in warm weather

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced fertiliser every 2–3 weeks in the growing season

    • Switch to a high-potash feed from midsummer to promote heavy flowering

  • Pruning and Maintenance:

    • Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering

    • In spring, cut back to 10–15 cm from the ground, or to fresh shoots

    • In mild climates, prune lightly to shape and remove winter damage

  • Winter Care:

    • Hardy in Zones 6–9 (RHS H5)

    • In colder areas, mulch heavily around the base to protect the crown

    • In very harsh winters, growth may die back further—cut to live wood in spring
