About Galanthus Snowdrops

Galanthus, commonly known as Snowdrops, are much-loved early-flowering bulbs that produce delicate, nodding white flowers with distinctive green markings. Often appearing while winter is still underway, Snowdrops are one of the first signs that spring is approaching.

Their flowers emerge above narrow, grey-green foliage and are particularly effective when planted in informal groups beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. Once established, Snowdrops can gradually naturalise and form larger colonies, creating increasingly impressive displays each year.

Their early flowers are also a useful source of food for bees and other pollinating insects active during mild winter and early spring weather.

Planting Guide

• Plant dry bulbs in early to mid-autumn as soon as possible after purchase.
• Choose a position in partial shade or dappled shade.
• They will also grow in sun where the soil remains reasonably moist.
• Prefer fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.
• Woodland-like conditions beneath deciduous trees and shrubs are ideal.
• Plant bulbs approximately 5–8cm deep.
• Position bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
• Space approximately 5–10cm apart.
• Plant the 10 bulbs in an informal group for a natural appearance.
• Water after planting if the soil is dry.

Planting for Naturalising

Snowdrops are particularly well suited to naturalised planting.

• Plant beneath deciduous trees and shrubs.
• Scatter bulbs informally rather than planting in straight rows.
• Avoid disturbing established clumps unnecessarily.
• Allow foliage to die back naturally each year.
• Over time, established bulbs can multiply to create larger drifts.
• Mature clumps can be divided 'in the green', shortly after flowering while still in leaf.

Planting in Containers

Snowdrops can also be grown successfully in pots.

• Choose a container with good drainage holes.
• Use a fertile, free-draining compost.
• Plant bulbs approximately 5–8cm deep.
• Keep the compost reasonably moist during active growth.
• Position the container outdoors in sun or partial shade.
• Avoid allowing pots to become permanently waterlogged.

Care & Maintenance

Snowdrops require very little attention once established.

• Keep newly planted bulbs adequately watered during dry conditions.
• Established plants usually require little additional watering in Irish gardens.
• Apply a light organic mulch around established clumps in autumn.
• Avoid excessive fertiliser.
• Leave plants undisturbed where possible.
• Divide overcrowded clumps every few years if flowering begins to decline.

After Flowering

• Replant divisions immediately and water them well.

Common Problems

Snowdrops are generally extremely reliable.

• Drying out after planting can reduce establishment, particularly with dry bulbs.
• Waterlogged soil can cause bulb rot.
• Removing foliage too early can weaken bulbs.
• Very dry summer soil may reduce performance in some locations.
• Slugs and snails may occasionally damage emerging foliage.
• Snowdrop grey mould can occasionally affect dense or overcrowded clumps.

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
