Description

Description and General Information

  • Botanical Name: Hamamelis × intermedia ‘Arnold Promise’

  • Common Name: Witch Hazel ‘Arnold Promise’

  • Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub

  • Origin: Hybrid of Hamamelis japonica and Hamamelis mollis, bred in the USA for exceptional late-winter performance.

  • Growth Habit: Upright, vase-shaped shrub, reaching 3–4 metres tall and 3–4 metres wide at maturity.

  • Foliage: Large, oval, green leaves turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange in autumn, adding multi-seasonal interest.

  • Flowers: Clusters of fragrant, ribbon-like, golden-yellow petals appear from January to March, often when little else is blooming.

  • Fragrance: Sweet, spicy scent that is particularly noticeable on mild winter days.

  • Seasonal Interest: Winter flowers, striking autumn foliage, and an elegant branching form provide year-round appeal.

  • Garden Uses: Excellent as a specimen shrub, in mixed borders, or as part of a winter garden display.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Flowers provide valuable early nectar for pollinators such as bees emerging from winter dormancy.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland, tolerating cold winter conditions without damage.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun to light partial shade; best flowering occurs in sunny, sheltered sites.

  • Soil Preferences: Prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil.

  • pH Range: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0).

  • Moisture Needs: Requires evenly moist soil, especially during establishment; dislikes prolonged drought or waterlogging.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in autumn or spring to allow strong root establishment before extreme weather.

  • Spacing: Allow 3–4 metres between plants for mature growth.

  • Shelter Needs: Plant in a sheltered position protected from strong winds to preserve flowers and foliage.

  • Companion Planting: Combines beautifully with hellebores, snowdrops, and early-flowering bulbs for a layered winter display.

  • Container Growing: Can be grown in large pots if watered regularly and given quality compost, but prefers open ground for best performance.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly during the first 1–2 years to establish strong roots.

    • Once established, water during extended dry periods, especially in summer.

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and abundant blooms.

  • Pruning:

    • Minimal pruning required; remove only dead, damaged, or crossing branches after flowering.

    • Lightly shape if necessary but avoid heavy cutting as it may reduce next year’s blooms.

  • Mulching: Apply a 5–7 cm mulch layer of organic matter in spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the soil. Keep mulch clear of the trunk.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free and resistant to most common diseases; occasional aphids may appear but rarely cause harm.

  • Winter Care: Fully hardy; no additional protection needed, though flowers last longer in mild, frost-free conditions.

  • Weed Control: Keep base area free of competing weeds and grass to maximise nutrient and water availability.

  • Longevity: Long-lived and low-maintenance once established, rewarding with decades of reliable late-winter colour and fragrance.
