Description

Description and General Information

  • Botanical Name: Hamamelis × intermedia ‘Ruby Glow’
  • Common Name: Witch Hazel ‘Ruby Glow’

  • Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub

  • Origin: Hybrid between Hamamelis mollis (China) and Hamamelis japonica (Japan), bred for rich flower colour and fragrance.

  • Growth Habit: Upright, spreading shrub with a graceful, open structure, typically reaching 3–4 metres in height and spread at maturity.

  • Foliage: Large, slightly crinkled, mid-green leaves that turn vibrant yellow, orange, and red in autumn.

  • Flowers: Striking, spidery blooms in shades of deep red to coppery crimson, appearing from January to March on bare branches.

  • Fragrance: Sweet and spicy scent, most noticeable in mild winter weather.

  • Seasonal Interest: Winter flowers, stunning autumn foliage, and attractive branch structure provide year-round value.

  • Garden Uses: Ideal as a specimen shrub, for winter gardens, or incorporated into mixed borders for seasonal interest.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Offers early nectar for bees and other pollinators when little else is in bloom.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland, coping well with winter cold.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Best in full sun to partial shade; more flowers are produced in sunnier, sheltered spots.

  • Soil Preferences: Prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.

  • pH Range: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0); avoid shallow chalky soils.

  • Moisture Needs: Likes moist, well-drained conditions; avoid prolonged drought or waterlogged sites.

  • Planting Time: Plant in autumn or spring to give roots time to establish before extreme weather.

  • Spacing: Allow 3–4 metres between plants to accommodate mature size.

  • Shelter Needs: Protect from cold, drying winds to prevent damage to delicate blooms and buds.

  • Companion Planting: Works beautifully alongside hellebores, snowdrops, and early-flowering bulbs for a layered seasonal display.

  • Container Growing: Can be grown in large pots, but open-ground planting is preferred for optimal growth and flowering.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly during the first couple of years after planting.

    • Once established, water in prolonged dry spells, especially in summer.

  • Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and flowering.

  • Pruning:

    • Minimal pruning is needed; remove only dead, damaged, or crossing branches after flowering.

    • Light shaping is possible but avoid heavy pruning as it can reduce flowering in the following year.

  • Mulching: Apply a 5–7 cm layer of organic mulch in spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil structure. Keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally pest-free and resistant to most diseases; occasional aphids may appear but are rarely a problem.

  • Winter Care: Fully hardy; however, flowers last longer if protected from severe frost and strong winds.

  • Weed Control: Keep the base of the shrub clear of weeds and grass to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

  • Longevity: Long-lived, low-maintenance, and highly ornamental—providing decades of reliable winter colour and fragrance with minimal care.
