Planting Hebe ‘Green Boys’®

• Site and position

  • Select a spot in full sun or partial shade; sunlight enhances the compact, dense habit and rich green foliage.

  • Choose a sheltered site protected from cold, drying winds, especially in inland or frost-prone areas.

  • Perfect for mixed borders, rockeries, low hedging or container displays thanks to its tidy, rounded form.

• Soil preparation

  • Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil; avoid heavy or waterlogged areas.

  • Will tolerate sandy or loamy soils, and slightly acidic to neutral pH levels.

  • Before planting, dig in organic matter such as garden compost or leaf mould to improve structure and fertility.

  • On heavier soils, incorporate horticultural grit to enhance drainage and prevent winter root problems.

• Planting in the ground

  • Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart; they will form neat mounds or continuous edging over time.

  • Dig a planting hole just larger than the pot, ensuring the rootball sits level with the soil surface.

  • Gently loosen roots if pot-bound and firm the soil around the plant after backfilling.

  • Water thoroughly to help roots settle and eliminate air pockets.

  • Apply a thin mulch of compost or bark after planting, keeping it clear of the plant’s base to prevent rot.

• Planting in containers

  • Use a loam-based, peat-free compost mixed with 20–30% horticultural grit for stability and drainage.

  • Ensure pots have drainage holes; add crocks or coarse gravel at the bottom.

  • Position the pot in a sunny, open area, such as a patio or balcony.

  • Water in well after planting and check moisture levels regularly, as containers dry out faster.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

• Watering

  • Keep newly planted hebes evenly moist until well established.

  • Mature plants are moderately drought tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

  • Avoid allowing the soil or compost to become waterlogged, especially in cold weather.

• Feeding

  • In beds, apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser each spring to promote healthy, compact growth.

  • Container plants benefit from a monthly liquid feed from late spring through midsummer.

  • Avoid overfeeding, as too much nitrogen can cause soft, frost-sensitive growth.

• Pruning and shaping

  • Hebe ‘Green Boys’® has a naturally compact, dome-shaped habit requiring minimal pruning.

  • Lightly trim over immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense new shoots.

  • Remove any damaged or winter-burned shoots in early spring, cutting back to healthy foliage.

  • Avoid cutting into old, woody stems, as they may not reshoot.

• Mulching and general upkeep

  • Refresh mulch in spring to help conserve moisture and reduce weeds.

  • Keep mulch and debris clear from around the base of the plant to discourage fungal issues.

  • Check container plants regularly for signs of stress or compaction, and repot every two to three years into fresh compost.

Seasonal Care, Problems and Design Tips

• Winter and frost protection

  • Hardy in mild coastal or southern areas; in colder regions, give extra protection during severe frost.

  • Move containers to a sheltered wall or wrap them with fleece to protect roots.

  • Ensure excellent drainage through the colder months to prevent root rot caused by waterlogging.

• Pests and diseases

  • Generally low-maintenance and pest-resistant.

  • Occasionally, aphids may appear on soft new growth; wash off with water or use an organic control if necessary.

  • Fungal leaf spots can occur in damp, crowded conditions—improve airflow and remove affected leaves promptly.

  • Avoid overhead watering late in the day to reduce disease risk.

• Longevity and display ideas

  • Expect mature plants to reach about 40–50 cm in height and spread, maintaining a tight, uniform dome.

  • Replace older specimens every few years if they become woody or sparse to keep displays looking fresh.

  • Combine with dwarf conifers, grasses, or silvery foliage plants for contrast, or use as a low evergreen edging for paths and beds.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
