General Growing and Harvesting Tips
Location & Soil
-
Place in full sun, though parsley and chives tolerate light shade
-
Use free-draining compost or soil; avoid waterlogged conditions
-
Raised beds or large pots work well for grouped herbs
Watering
-
Water consistently but moderately
-
Herbs like thyme and rosemary prefer drier conditions, while parsley and chives enjoy more moisture
-
Avoid watering foliage—target the base
Feeding
-
Most herbs don’t require heavy feeding
-
Use a diluted organic liquid fertiliser monthly in the growing season
-
Avoid overfeeding as it can reduce flavour intensity
Harvesting
-
Pick leaves regularly to promote new growth
-
Morning is best for harvesting when oils are most concentrated
-
Avoid cutting more than one-third of a plant at a time
Seasonal Care and Maintenance
-
Rosemary and thyme can remain outdoors year-round in mild areas
-
Parsley and chives may die back in winter but re-emerge in spring
-
Tarragon may need winter protection in colder zones or be lifted and potted
-
Regular pruning keeps plants compact and productive
-
Mulch with grit or gravel to improve drainage and prevent weeds
