Description and Characteristics

Heuchera ‘Magma’ is a bold and vibrant evergreen perennial known for its intense, ruby-red to deep magenta foliage. Bred for dramatic colour and year-round interest, this variety forms a dense, compact mound of deeply lobed, glossy leaves that shift subtly with light and season—from rich red in spring and summer to darker crimson tones in autumn and winter.

In late spring to mid-summer, Heuchera ‘Magma’ produces slender, upright stems topped with tiny bell-shaped pinkish-white flowers that sway gracefully above the foliage. While the flowers add a soft vertical accent and attract pollinators, the plant’s main appeal lies in its eye-catching foliage, which maintains its colour exceptionally well through the seasons.

'Magma' typically grows to 30–35 cm tall and 40 cm wide, with flower stems reaching up to 50 cm. It performs well in both borders and containers and is particularly effective in contrasting colour-themed plantings or as a standout accent in shaded gardens.

Heuchera ‘Magma’ is a low-maintenance, adaptable perennial, suitable for a variety of garden conditions, particularly those with partial shade and well-drained soil.

• Light Requirements:

  • Thrives in partial shade to light sun

  • In cooler climates, can tolerate full sun if soil is kept moist

  • In hot climates, protect from intense afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch

• Soil Preferences:

  • Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil

  • Suitable for neutral to slightly acidic pH

  • Add grit or organic matter to improve drainage in heavy clay

• Watering Needs:

  • Water regularly during establishment

  • Once mature, keep evenly moist, especially in containers or dry spells

  • Avoid waterlogging to prevent crown rot

• Feeding:

  • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser

  • Container-grown plants benefit from liquid feeding every 4–6 weeks during growing season

• Pruning and Maintenance:

  • Remove old or tattered leaves in early spring to tidy the plant

  • Deadhead spent flowers to prolong bloom and encourage neat growth

  • Divide every 3–4 years in spring or early autumn to maintain vigour

• Winter Care:

  • Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9 (RHS H5)

  • Evergreen in mild winters; semi-evergreen in colder regions

  • In cold climates, apply a light mulch in autumn to protect the crown

The in-Store delivery charge will vary compared with online, in-store delivery charge is done on a case by case basis.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.
 

Click & Collect

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
