Planting Conditions and Site Selection

• Light Requirements: Hosta 'Golden Waffles' thrives in partial to full shade. Morning sun can enhance the golden leaf color, but too much direct sunlight—especially in the afternoon—may scorch the foliage.

• Soil Type: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with high organic content. Amending the soil with compost or leaf mold enhances moisture retention and soil structure.

• Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil. It does not tolerate drought well, so select a location where it will be regularly watered or retain natural moisture.

• Location Tips: Ideal for shaded beds, woodland borders, or under deciduous trees. Ensure the area is sheltered from strong winds to protect its textured leaves.

• Planting Time: Best planted in early spring or early autumn. These cooler seasons support strong root development without stress from extreme heat or cold.

• Spacing: Space plants about 3 to 4 feet apart to allow for mature spread and airflow between clumps, which helps prevent disease.

Routine Care and Maintenance

• Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods. Consistency is key—avoid letting the soil dry out completely. Drip irrigation or a soaker hose is ideal to minimize wetting the foliage.

• Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Organic options such as composted manure or fish emulsion also work well to maintain healthy growth.

• Mulching: Add a 2–3 inch mulch layer to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch an inch or two away from the crown to prevent rotting.

• Deadheading and Pruning: Remove flower stalks after blooming to focus energy back into the plant. Prune damaged or yellowing leaves as needed to maintain appearance.

• Dividing: Divide mature clumps every 3–5 years in early spring or late summer to rejuvenate the plant and prevent overcrowding. Dividing also offers an opportunity to propagate.

• Pest Management: Watch for slugs and snails, which can damage the large leaves. Use traps, diatomaceous earth, or organic slug pellets as needed. Deer and rabbits may also feed on hostas, so protect vulnerable plants with fencing or repellents.

• Disease Control: Good airflow and avoiding overhead watering reduce the risk of crown rot, anthracnose, and other fungal issues. Sanitize tools between plants to prevent the spread of disease.

Appearance and Seasonal Interest

• Foliage: The star feature of 'Golden Waffles' is its large, deeply textured foliage in rich golden-yellow tones. The puckered, corrugated leaves add dramatic texture to shaded garden spaces.

• Size and Form: Reaches approximately 2–2.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide at maturity, forming a mounded, spreading clump that makes a bold statement.

• Flowers: Produces pale lavender to nearly white tubular flowers in early to midsummer on 24–30 inch scapes. The blooms attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.

• Seasonal Appeal: From spring emergence through late fall, the foliage remains striking. In autumn, leaves may fade to a more muted yellow before dying back.

• Companion Plants: Complements shade-loving plants such as Japanese forest grass, pulmonaria, brunnera, and ferns. Pair with blue- or green-leaved hostas for contrasting effect.

• Winter Care: In late autumn, cut foliage to the ground once it has died back naturally. Apply a protective mulch over the crown to shield it from severe winter temperatures.

• Hardiness: Suitable for USDA Zones 3–9, making it a versatile perennial across a broad range of climates.

Live Plants Delivery

Our live plants are packed with care and diligence by our staff, our horticulturists review each plant before despatch to ensure quality is maintained.
Live Plant delivery charges are not calculated on weight but on the space required per package to ensure safe delivery, so delivery charges may vary as some plants require more space than others when packed.
All live plants are despatched within 3-5 working days where possible, our couriers aim to deliver within 48 hours of despatch from our Garden Centre to allow the plant to arrive in healthy condition.

Can’t wait for delivery? Why not try our FREE Click & Collect service? Simply make your purchase online and collect it from our store located in Croagh Co. Limerick. Our staff will contact you by phone when your order is ready for collection (Please allow 24 hours minimum). When collecting your item, call the store on 069-64084. We will then load into your car as required. This service is available in-store 9am – 6pm Monday – Saturday (No collections on Sundays)
