Description

Description and General Information

  • Botanical Name: Hydrangea macrophylla (various premium cultivars)

  • Common Name: Premium Hydrangea (various varieties)

  • Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub

  • Pot Size: Supplied in a premium 7.5-litre container for well-established plants ready to make an immediate garden impact.

  • Growth Habit: Bushy, rounded form, typically reaching 1–1.5 metres in height and spread, depending on variety.

  • Foliage: Large, glossy, mid-green leaves that provide a lush backdrop to the blooms.

  • Flowers: Large, showy mophead or lacecap flower clusters in shades of pink, blue, purple, or white—depending on the variety and soil pH.

  • Flowering Period: From June to September, often continuing into early autumn.

  • Seasonal Interest: Summer and early autumn blooms, bold foliage in spring through autumn, and dried flower heads for winter texture.

  • Garden Uses: Ideal for borders, specimen planting, cottage gardens, large containers, and cut flowers.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade; morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal to protect flowers and foliage from scorching.

  • Soil Preferences: Moist, fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil enriched with compost.

  • pH Range:

    • Acidic soil (pH below 6) produces blue to purple flowers.

    • Neutral to alkaline soil (pH above 7) produces pink to red flowers.

  • Moisture Needs: Requires consistently moist soil—especially during hot or dry spells. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or autumn for strong root establishment before summer heat or winter cold.

  • Spacing: Allow 1–1.5 metres between plants for mature growth.

  • Shelter Needs: Plant in a sheltered position to protect flower buds from strong winds and late frosts.

  • Companion Planting: Combines well with hostas, ferns, heucheras, Japanese maples, and shade-loving perennials.

  • Container Growing: Well suited for large pots; use a quality loam-based compost and ensure good drainage.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Water deeply 1–2 times weekly in dry weather.

    • Avoid waterlogging, especially in containers.

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring.

    • For blue blooms, use a hydrangea colourant or aluminium sulphate; for pink blooms, lime the soil if needed.

  • Pruning:

    • Remove spent flower heads in spring, cutting just above the first pair of healthy buds.

    • Remove any dead or damaged stems.

    • On older plants, cut one or two of the oldest stems at the base to encourage fresh growth.

  • Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm mulch layer in spring to conserve moisture, enrich soil, and suppress weeds.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally robust; may occasionally be affected by aphids, capsid bugs, or powdery mildew—treat as needed and maintain good airflow.

  • Winter Care: Fully hardy; leaving spent flower heads on over winter can help protect buds from frost. In colder areas, mulch heavily around the base for added root protection.

  • Weed Control: Keep the root zone clear of weeds to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

  • Longevity: With the right care, premium hydrangeas will provide abundant blooms and strong growth for many years.
