About Hydrangea macrophylla (JG) Mix
Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as Bigleaf Hydrangea, is a popular ornamental shrub valued for its large, showy blooms and lush foliage. The "JG mix" typically refers to a mix of colours—often including shades of pink, blue, purple, and white—bringing vibrant diversity to any garden display.
This variety is particularly loved for its mophead or lacecap blooms, which can vary in colour depending on the pH of the soil. Acidic soils produce blue or purple flowers, while alkaline soils yield pink or red tones. Compact and elegant in form, Hydrangea macrophylla is perfect for borders, containers, cottage gardens, and as a feature plant.

Ongoing Care and Maintenance

Watering:
-
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Water deeply during hot, dry weather—especially in containers.

Avoid heavy pruning, as Hydrangea macrophylla blooms on old wood—last year’s growth.
-
Light shaping can be done after flowering if necessary.

Deadheading:
-
Remove faded blooms to tidy the plant and encourage new buds.
-
-
Winter Protection:

Hardy, but in colder areas, protect with a layer of mulch or fleece during severe frost.
