Description

Description and General Information

  • Botanical Name: Hydrangea macrophylla (Mixed Varieties – JG Series)

  • Common Name: Mophead Hydrangea, Bigleaf Hydrangea

  • Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub

  • Origin: Native to Japan, widely cultivated for ornamental value

  • Growth Habit: Rounded, bushy shrub reaching 1–1.5 metres in height and spread, with lush foliage and large flower heads.

  • Foliage: Large, ovate, glossy green leaves with serrated edges provide an attractive backdrop to the blooms.

  • Flowers: Rounded clusters of large, showy florets in a mix of colours including pink, blue, purple, and white, depending on variety and soil pH.

  • Flowering Period: Typically from June to September, with some varieties blooming into early autumn.

  • Seasonal Interest: Spectacular summer blooms, attractive foliage through the growing season, and dried flower heads that add winter interest if left in place.

  • Garden Uses: Excellent for mixed borders, cottage gardens, foundation planting, and large containers; also makes beautiful cut or dried flowers.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade; can tolerate morning sun but benefits from protection from strong afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.

  • Soil Preferences: Fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.

  • pH Range:

    • Acidic soil (pH below 6) produces blue to purple flowers.

    • Alkaline soil (pH above 7) produces pink to red flowers.

  • Moisture Needs: Consistently moist soil is essential, particularly in summer; avoid allowing the root zone to dry out.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or autumn when soil is warm and moist.

  • Spacing: Space plants 1–1.5 metres apart to allow for mature spread.

  • Shelter Needs: Plant in a sheltered spot, protected from strong winds and late frosts which can damage emerging flower buds.

  • Companion Planting: Pairs beautifully with hostas, ferns, Japanese maples, and shade-loving perennials.

  • Container Growing: Suitable for large pots; use a quality loam-based compost and water regularly.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Water deeply once or twice weekly during dry periods.

    • Ensure soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring.

    • For blue flowers, use a hydrangea colourant or aluminium sulphate in acidic soil.

    • For pink flowers, use lime to increase soil alkalinity if needed.

  • Pruning:

    • Minimal pruning—remove only dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring.

    • For older plants, cut out 1–2 of the oldest stems at the base to encourage new growth.

    • Leave faded flower heads on through winter to protect developing buds from frost; remove in spring.

  • Mulching: Apply a 5–8 cm layer of organic mulch in spring to conserve moisture, improve soil, and suppress weeds.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally resistant, but may occasionally suffer from aphids, leaf spot, or powdery mildew—improve airflow to prevent fungal issues.

  • Winter Care: Fully hardy; in colder areas, mulch heavily around the base and cover with fleece during severe frost to protect buds.

  • Weed Control: Keep the base area free of weeds to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

  • Longevity: Long-lived shrub that, with proper care, will bloom reliably for decades.
