Description

Description and General Information

  • Botanical Name: Hypericum ‘Hidcote’

  • Common Name: St. John’s Wort ‘Hidcote’

  • Plant Type: Hardy, deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub

  • Growth Habit: Dense, bushy shrub with a rounded shape; typically reaches 1.2 metres in height and spread.

  • Foliage: Small, oval, dark green leaves that may remain through mild winters.

  • Flowers: Large, golden-yellow, saucer-shaped blooms up to 7–8 cm across, with prominent central stamens for a striking effect.

  • Flowering Period: Mid-summer to early autumn (July to September), producing a long-lasting display.

  • Seasonal Interest: Bright yellow summer flowers, neat green foliage, and attractive seed capsules that add winter structure.

  • Garden Uses: Ideal for borders, hedging, ground cover, and mixed shrub planting. Works well in informal gardens and cottage-style landscapes.

  • Wildlife Benefits: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK and Ireland.

Planting Conditions and Ideal Location

  • Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade; flowering is best in sunnier positions.

  • Soil Preferences: Any well-drained soil, including poor or sandy types; will tolerate clay if drainage is improved.

  • pH Range: Neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 6.5–8.0).

  • Moisture Needs: Moderate water needs—tolerates short dry spells once established but prefers evenly moist soil.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or autumn when conditions are mild.

  • Spacing: Space plants 60–90 cm apart depending on use (closer for hedging, wider for individual specimens).

  • Shelter Needs: Thrives in open positions but will also do well in sheltered spots; tolerates coastal conditions.

  • Companion Planting: Complements other summer-flowering shrubs such as spiraea, potentilla, and buddleja.

  • Container Growing: Can be grown in large pots; use a loam-based compost for stability and moisture retention.

Routine Care, Feeding, and Seasonal Maintenance

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish.

    • Once mature, water during extended dry periods, especially in containers.

  • Feeding:

    • Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowers.

    • A light top-dressing of compost in spring can also boost soil health.

  • Pruning:

    • Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged stems and encourage new growth.

    • Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat shape.

  • Mulching: Apply a 5 cm layer of compost, bark chips, or well-rotted manure around the base in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Generally free from serious pests; occasional aphids or rust may appear but are rarely problematic.

  • Winter Care: Fully hardy; no winter protection is needed. In colder areas, mulch lightly to protect roots.

  • Weed Control: Keep the area around the base weed-free to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

  • Longevity: A long-lived shrub that provides year-after-year summer colour with minimal maintenance.
