Description

Description and Characteristics

Hypericum moserianum 'Tricolor' is a compact, deciduous shrub known for its striking variegated foliage and cheerful yellow flowers. A cultivar of Hypericum moserianum (a hybrid between H. calycinum and H. patulum), ‘Tricolor’ adds colour to the garden even when not in bloom, thanks to its multicoloured leaves.

The foliage features a unique mix of green, pink, and creamy-white variegation, with pink tones most prominent in cool weather or on new growth. From mid to late summer (July to September), the plant produces bright golden-yellow, star-shaped flowers with prominent stamens, which attract pollinators and contrast beautifully against the multicoloured leaves.

‘Tricolor’ typically forms a low, mounded shrub, reaching about 45–60 cm tall and wide, making it ideal for ground cover, borders, containers, and small garden spaces. It is especially useful for adding colour in shady areas, where its foliage shines.

  • Deciduous shrub with variegated green, pink, and cream foliage

  • Produces bright yellow flowers in mid to late summer

  • Compact habit: 45–60 cm in height and spread

  • Excellent for small borders, containers, and woodland edges

  • Brings year-round interest, even when not in flower

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

    • Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and flower production

    • Mulch lightly in early spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds

  • Pruning and Maintenance:

    • Cut back in early spring to 10–15 cm to rejuvenate and encourage fresh growth

    • Remove any dead, damaged, or plain green shoots to preserve variegation

    • Can be trimmed again lightly after flowering if needed

  • Winter Care:

    • Hardy in Zones 6–9 (RHS H5)

    • Deciduous—loses foliage in autumn, regrows in spring

    • In colder areas, apply mulch at the base to protect roots during severe frosts
