Care Guide
Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Star’ is one of the easiest conifers to care for, thriving with very little attention.
Planting
-
Plant in a sunny position for best foliage colour.
-
Ensure the soil is well-drained, as junipers dislike soggy conditions.
-
Improve heavy soils by adding grit or sand to aid drainage.
-
Allow space for its slow spread when planting in borders or rock gardens.
Watering & Feeding
-
Water regularly in the first growing season to establish roots.
-
Once mature, it is drought-tolerant and only requires watering in extended dry periods.
-
Feed annually in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy growth.
Pruning & Maintenance
-
Pruning is generally unnecessary, as it naturally maintains its compact dome shape.
-
If needed, lightly trim to remove dead or damaged shoots.
-
Keep the base free of weeds or competing plants to maintain airflow.
Protection
-
Fully hardy in the UK and Ireland, withstanding frost and snow without damage.
-
Avoid planting in heavy, clay soils that hold water, as this can cause root problems.
