Description and Characteristics

Kniphofia Orange Vanilla Popsicle® is a standout member of the Popsicle Series, bred for compact size, extended bloom time, and vibrant bicolour flowers. This unique variety produces upright spikes of creamy vanilla buds that transition into rich orange at the tips, resembling a two-tone frozen treat—hence the name. Its eye-catching colour and tidy form make it ideal for small spaces, containers, and sunny borders.

Unlike traditional tall Kniphofias, Orange Vanilla Popsicle® maintains a compact height of around 45–60 cm, with a spread of 30–45 cm. Flowering begins in early summer and can continue through early autumn with regular deadheading. The flowers rise above clumps of narrow, grass-like green foliage, which remains neat and upright throughout the season.

This cultivar is both heat and drought tolerant once established and offers excellent support for pollinators, especially bees and butterflies.

  • Distinctive bicolour flower spikes in orange and creamy white

  • Compact habit: Height 45–60 cm, Spread 30–45 cm

  • Long flowering season: June to September

  • Tidy, clump-forming foliage with strong vertical stems

  • Perfect for containers, borders, and low-maintenance designs

  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators

Growing Conditions and Maintenance

Kniphofia Orange Vanilla Popsicle® is low-maintenance and thrives in sunny, well-drained locations. Its smaller size and disease resistance make it ideal for urban settings and smaller gardens.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Requires full sun for maximum flowering and compact growth

    • Will tolerate light shade, though with reduced bloom density

  • Soil Preferences:

    • Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soils

    • Tolerant of average to poor soils if drainage is sufficient

    • Avoid waterlogged or clay-heavy soil

  • Watering Needs:

    • Water regularly during the first season to establish roots

    • Once mature, it is drought-tolerant

    • Reduce watering in cooler months or when dormant

  • Feeding:

    • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring

    • Optional: feed with a high-potash liquid fertiliser mid-season to encourage flowering

  • Deadheading and Pruning:

    • Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage continuous blooms

    • Cut back foliage and flower stems in late autumn or early spring

    • Keep foliage intact during winter for extra crown protection

  • Winter Care:

    • Hardy in Zones 6–9 (RHS H4–H5); mulch crown lightly in cold regions

    • In wet climates, improve drainage or raise beds to prevent rot

    • Container-grown plants can be moved to a sheltered position in winter

  • Dividing and Replanting:

    • Divide every 3–4 years in spring to maintain performance

    • Replant immediately in prepared soil
