Allium Large Flowering Mix – Landscape Bag of 40 Bulbs – Planting & Care Guide

About Allium Large Flowering Mix

Allium Large Flowering Mix is a striking collection of ornamental onions selected for their impressive globe-shaped flower heads and tall, architectural stems. Depending on the varieties included, the mixture can produce flowers in shades of purple, violet, lilac and white.

Flowering from late spring into summer, large-flowering Alliums add height and structure to borders. Their spherical blooms look particularly impressive planted in generous groups amongst perennials and ornamental grasses.

The flowers are also highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects.

This landscape bag contains 40 bulbs, making it ideal for mass planting and larger garden displays.

Planting Guide

  • Plant in autumn, ideally from September to November.
  • Choose a position in full sun.
  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Good drainage is particularly important during winter.
  • Plant bulbs approximately 10–15cm deep, depending on bulb size.
  • As a general rule, plant at around 3 times the height of the bulb.
  • Position bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.
  • Space approximately 15–25cm apart, depending on the varieties included.
  • Plant in informal groups or drifts rather than individually for maximum impact.
  • Water after planting if the soil is particularly dry.

Planting for a Landscape Display

With 40 bulbs, this mix is particularly suitable for creating a substantial display.

  • Divide the bulbs into several generous groups throughout a border.
  • Plant between herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses.
  • Avoid planting in rigid straight lines.
  • Position shorter perennials around the bulbs to disguise Allium foliage as it begins to fade.
  • Repeating groups throughout a border creates a particularly effective landscape design.

Planting in Containers

Large-flowering Alliums can also make spectacular container plants.

  • Choose a large, deep and stable container with drainage holes.
  • Use good-quality multipurpose compost with added grit for drainage.
  • Plant bulbs at approximately three times their own depth.
  • Avoid overcrowding large bulbs.
  • Position the container in full sun.
  • Keep reasonably moist during active growth but avoid waterlogging.
  • Taller varieties may need some shelter from strong winds.

Care & Maintenance

Alliums are generally extremely easy to maintain.

  • Water during prolonged dry periods while plants are actively growing.
  • Established bulbs usually need little additional watering.
  • Avoid excessive feeding, particularly with high-nitrogen fertilisers.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring if growing in poor soil.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally.
  • Established bulbs can remain undisturbed for several years.

Pollinator & Wildlife Value

Ornamental Alliums are excellent plants for pollinator-friendly gardens.

  • Large flower heads contain numerous individual nectar-rich flowers.
  • Particularly attractive to bees and butterflies.
  • Different varieties within the mixture may extend the overall flowering period.
  • Planting the bulbs in groups creates highly visible feeding stations for visiting insects.

Seasonal Interest

  • Spring: Strap-like green foliage emerges.
  • Late spring to summer: Tall stems carry spectacular spherical flower heads.
  • Summer: Flowers gradually fade and develop architectural seed heads.
  • Autumn and winter: Dried seed heads can remain decorative if left standing.

After Flowering

  • Faded flower heads can be removed or left to form decorative seed heads.
  • Do not remove the leaves while they remain green.
  • Allow foliage to yellow and die back naturally.
  • The bulbs can remain permanently planted in suitable well-drained soil.
  • Established clumps can be lifted and divided if they become overcrowded.

Common Problems

Alliums are generally tough and reliable.

  • Winter waterlogging is one of the main causes of bulb failure.
  • Heavy clay soils should be improved to increase drainage.
  • Allium foliage naturally begins to yellow around flowering time; this is normal.
  • Slugs and snails may occasionally damage emerging shoots.
  • Onion fly and fungal problems can occasionally occur.
  • Very exposed locations may cause taller flower stems to lean in strong winds.

With its 40 large-flowering Allium bulbs, this Landscape Bag is ideal for creating an impressive architectural display across larger borders. The combination of tall stems, colourful globe-shaped flowers and exceptional appeal to bees and butterflies makes Large Flowering Alliums an outstanding choice for sunny Irish gardens
